BX TZD gearbox in a 16V ?

Unread post by David W »

Anyone tried fitting a TZD gearbox to a 16V for more relaxed cruising?
My thoughts are that it should bolt up but that the splines might be different as the clutch part nos are different. Clutch cable and driveshafts seem to be the same part.
What about the 16V flywheel sensor that goes on the bellhousing?
Wonder if you left your 16V gearbox in Vanny or did you swap the whole TD engine/gearbox on your project?

You may have to wait for an answer David; I think Vanny's firmly planted under the bonnet at present.
I have heard of something along the lines you are talking about but I think it was more along the lines of swapping the final drive or top gear or something like that as I can remember them talking about the RPM X MPH ratio and how it slowed the engine down for better fuel consumption & quieter running, but that's the thrill of the 16V....that big throaty roar as the engine hits 4500 & bursts into life or maybe that's just my midlife crisis cutting in again.[:D][:D][}:)][:p]

I wouldn't of thought a 16V would be able to pull a TZD 'box ratios and final drive, or at least would destroy the engines driveability. I've read of people having lots of success fitting the 5th gear cog from a Diesel 'box to the original 16V 'box to give more relaxed cruising in 5th. I'll see if I can find some more info.

Thanks. Any further info appreciated. It's for a contact who is very close to doing this but doesn't use forums to ask himself. I understand a transmission specialist will do this for him and it did sound like they might be thinking of swapping some box internals.
Anyone have the mph/1000rpm figures to hand for the various BXs?
Must admit I'd wondered about the high gearing killing the feel of a 16V, mind you knew a chap who did it with an 8V GTI and he was very happy with the result.
I'm gutted for Vanny, been there and done that..... before age and experience made double/triple checking the norm!

David, I put all the ratios from Haynes thru an excel spreadsheet but cant see how to post the sheet here. Anyway here are the final speeds at 3000 rpm for the various petrol boxes. My diesel wagon had the same ratios as the BL62 box from a 19 petrol but dont know if this was original or not. Currently running a BX16 box which is fantastic around town but could do with a higher top for the bush. Planning on putting the higher top into a TRI BL68 box which will bump me up about 20klicks at the same rpm (Combo on the list below)

Adrian,
Would love to read them but not a member and it won't let me in!

Sorry about that David!
If you follow the 'register' link from the menu at the top of the screen it only takes a minute to register.
Didn't realise you needed to be registered just to view posts - I think this was an attempt by Matthew to cut down on the spammers harvesting e-mail addresses from posts!

Adrian,
OK I'll register a little later. Ought to have a look in now again given my activities with general BX info elsewhere!

If there is a spline difference I would have thought that you would be able to find a clutch plate to fit the splines and which was the correct diameter.
I agree with all the comments above. As a mattr of interest I don't think the 6 speed box provide a cruising gear but 6 sprint gears instead.

OK I registered Adrian, thanks. Loads of interesting tech stuff there, of interest to 16V and normal BX owners. Seems a good "community".
First post you linked to was nearest the mark, I'll pass on the thoughts to this guy before he rips it apart.

Glad you like it - much better than the old one where posts were in no particular order and were lost once they dropped off the bottom!
Mike E is a sensible chap and he and a friend seem to spend lots of time gathering up tatty 16V's for spares.
Has a tidy standard phase 2 and I'm sure would be happy to advise (and can probably supply bits as well) to do the job.
