Hi,
After 8 fuel top ups, and I mean top ups- the fuel is seen at top of filler neck and stays at that level, the Xantia is averaging out at 45.56 to the gallon. I rarely go over 70 mph, keeping it at around 55-65. The car is de-catted, best thing I ever done.

Nearly as good as a 2.1 or HDi...

I would concur, my 1.9s have never been as good as the 2.1s, the 2.1 XM will do a best of about 55 mpg driven carefully and not fast, my Hdi only manages about 5 or 6 mpg more.

Got 816 miles on a full tank with my '95 Xantia I first had, plenty of hypermilling though.

Platinum. also honey-comb Hence the good price at the scrap dealers...

45.6 WOW.. that is amazing... I get 43mpg average in my HDi, but I am clogging at 80mph most of the time on the dual carrageway...

Ive never ever had any more then 41mpg from any of my 1.9td's.. Ive never rated the XUD for excellent MPG at all..

Crikey Paul even I managed to get 42mpg out of Cassy on veg with 4 adults (ok 5 if you include my belly), a dog in the boot and a roofbox full of our stuff.

Im very surprised at that, the 1.9 being worse on fuel than a 2.1.

I seem to get similar from our 2.1 Xm, nearer 50 on a run is not out of the question when cruising at 70-80. This past week our 2.1 XM has averaged 47.5 MPG over 650 miles. That was a lot of my driving and a lot of it following me in the Activa, so not going slowly.

Are 2.1 Xantias better than 1.9 Xantias on fuel, or is it the fact the a good few 2.1 XMs are Bosch pumped?

Yes, and the most frugal ones have the Lucas EPIC pump... 50 is easy and 55 possible

The EPIC as an economy pump is seriously good...

EDIT: Also, the stonking torque of the 2.1 also helps economy. The 1.9 lacks the same low-down grunt in my experience but makes up for it by being revvier and more lively... The 2.1 is a bit of an old-school low-revver. Not sporty at all....

I think that low down torque is the secret of its economy, you very rarely have to change down, unless you are in a hurry, it will pull right down to tickover, its even better at that then the Hdi.

My 55 mpg is achieved at at nearer 60 mph, but the best I have had from the Hdi at that speed is around 62.

I like the 2.1 very much

I need to fit a 3 point linkage on the back, stick on some mud and snow tyres and see how it fares towing a 4 furrow plough, I'm sure there would be no issues with this.

I need to do some searching into the EPIC on here as I'm overunning when turning the engine off and I'm damn sure that was mentioned here about the pump doing some kind of emergency stop instead of what it should be doing.

You are one of the 'elite' Kev, there are very few 2.1 EPIC manuals around, I really don't think the clutch is up to ploughing though

Id much rather plough with a 2.1TD clutch and a HDi DMF one

Im surprised to see the 2.0 turbo petrol having the same torque figures as the 2.1TD.

That's it Kev, common problem. You have failing seals on the ESOS valves; they're a gang of four electrovalves inside the pump that control speed, timing and stopping.

Provided you an get spares, it's not too hard to replace them; a bit like replacing tap washers...

Yes Chris, the TCT is not short of torque at all, a bit like a diesel really except for the fuel consumption...
