Citroen Relay 1.9 engine compatibility

Hi everyone, a long time since I have posted here. My brother has just called me. He had broken down on the side of the A9 in Scotland (on his way to a new job in rural Highlands). He described the van as making a grinding noise then dying. It has used all it's coolant and the oil has vanished somewhere as well. It sounds like the engine is pretty dead....

My question is this: I guess any XUD9 engine will be compatible for his 1997 van, is this correct? Also, any ideas where he can source a reasonaly engine (it'd probably need to be delivered). Will immobilisers etc be a problem (as far as I know, he has an aftermarket immobiliser). Also, does he need to source an engine with the same pump?

ANY Xud9 from ZX, 306, 309, 405, etc etc should do the job..

As for immobilisers, these will be plumbd into the Injection Pump so you WILL need to swap the pump across, and also the flywheel I guess too, as later XUD's have a TDC pickup on the flywheel ontop of the gearbox...

Ebay is probably the best place to find one, go for a private one if possible, most dealers have an unrealistic idea of their value.

Thanks for the replies. It's a bit of a logistical nightmare; he's living on a very rural RSPB reserve in the highlands without internet access and I'm in Suffolk trying to source an engine for him. He lacks the skills to do the work himself but needs to get the van back on the road as he's spent a lot of cash converting it to a camper. He's found a garage willing to do the work if be can source the engine.

We are going up there in the middle of May, don't know what help I can be though I don't think we will have room for an engine and he will hopefully have it sorted by then. Its usually expensive to get things delivered up there and scrap yards are a bit thin on the ground. Where abouts approximately is he?

Thanks Peter. He's in Insh (near Avimore). He's been on the phone to various scrapyards today. I've found a couple of likely candidates with courier costs of £60.

OK, that's a bit south of where we go, the only breakers I know of is on the Wick to John O Groats road

there should be a few in Inverness which isn't to far. Hope he gets sorted allright.

Dredging this up, what year was the XUD replaced with the DW8 engine in the Relay? If XUD's were still used in 2000, is it likely to compatible with a 96/97 van?

They use the same mounts... But if its a 96/97 van that will be xud..... Dw8 didnt come till 99...

Yes same... The hdi replaced the xud 2.1 first... So the xud carried on till late as 99 wheb the hdi 90 came in and the n/a dw8.... Which ever engine you choose they ALL use the same mounts anf u may find its just different exhaust connection to manifold that may differ...

Sorry for the many questions; last one hopefully... The seller of an engine nearby has confirmed thy it is an XUD but late one. Is it likely to present any significant problems when fitting it to a 1996/1997 van? I know there are some immobiliser differences somebody mentioned needing the flywheel etc as well. Any other pitfalls to watch out for?

No not really... If you put your pump and flywheel onto his engine there will be no problem at all...

You need the pump so your immobiliser will still work, and the flywheel for the Pickup sensor... HOWEVER, his engine if its a late one WILL already have the right flywheel on .. you'll know because the pickup sensor is on top of the bell house on the gearbox.. and the flywheel is quite wide with chuncky blocks on it..
