The 1.9TD is way better than it ought to be with a mere 90 BHP - but you do have to rev it if you want it to go - pretty flat below 3k rpm. The HDi (in 110 guise at least!) is much much better (unless you want to run on veg oil of course!). Quieter, smoother, much more tractable, rarely needs >3k rpm. Suspension and brake parts are all more expensive of course. 65k put on my HDi so far - I'm hoping to get at least the same again.

Twice.....I think....that that's been mentioned now.
I wasn't aware that the suspension and steering were different on the two models. I though it was just the engine and transmission.
Why was this then? :?

Oh, and tuning boxes were mentioned to uprate the HDi 90 to approx 110.
I presume this tweek isn't possible on a TD?

No doubt there will be mucho and many threads buried on the subject in here somewhere?
I am warming more and more towrds the TD, I must be honest, especially this low mileage with history and one owner estate one I've found in Exeter.

Indeed John, mine goes pretty well even with the cat while others without cat have seen 150hp+ on the dyno. With changes to the pump and turbo, over 200hp is possible

Got to be some sort of a monster of a turbo for that sort of increase surely?
Intercooler?

That's a staggering bhp increase,  but just how does the clutch and gearbox cope with that?

Whats the difference between the 1.7td in the bx and the 1.9td in the 405.
I thought they where the same engine. But how come one says 1.7td and the other 1.9td.

Mine bx is a 1.7td with a bosch pump. Say if i got a xantia or bx with lucas. Can i swap them round?
Everyone keeps saying how good bosch is to lucas.

Well if their fuel pumps are as good as their power tools and elecrtical household white goods, then I can see quite clearly why tbh.

I've been using a Bosch heat gun virtually evey day in my job for the last 4 years, and it's still going strong.
Quality gear. :sun:

Just prior to the demise of British Leyland they had alternative suppliers of most electrical bits in order to try and maintain production when one was on strike, didn't help a lot though as they were on strike themselves most of the time.

Interesting, all my 1.9TD's have pulled from just over 2000rpm, the power really kicks in at about 2400rpm, it's one of the things that makes them quite special :)
