Overall i am very happy with my xant, I have done all my spheres etc, the rear of the car is very smooth, in the proper cit way, but at low to medium speeds the front seems harsh and makes a sort of thumping noise, its not a knocking more of a soft tyre on a rough road noise.
The best way of describing it is like a karummp noise in quick suscession, sorry to be vauge.
My first guess is the roll bar to strut supports ( the ones with 2 balljoints, got under and wiggled them but they didn't seem worn but the action seemed to be jerky and not very smooth.
Anybody had the same trouble.[V]

Droplinks [;)]
These would most likely cause a knocking/rattling sound.
Eiter because of wear clearance, or the joints are dried out in the grease.
When dry, the joint tends to bind, then suddenly slips, which is heard as knock, amplified by the body shell.
The droplinks are impossible to fault trace at this stage, because no clearance exists.
But the joints have those small protector bellows, which can be penetrated by an injection needle, injecting a few mL of grease, just enough it will eject a bit, when needle is removed.
This is a known work around, to try if the joints are dry, as they will shut up in a few days with fresh grease.
A thumping sort of noise (and actually feeling during drive) may be caused by the front struts themselves :
The good old BX syndrome, with dry piston rod in the strut slide bearing.
Solved the usual BX way : suspension on highest, then detach the bellow from the strut, lift up to access the shiny strut rod, clean with rags and apply grease to the rod. Most important to grease all the way round the rod circumference, not so important to reach all the way up under the bellow, as the grease will spread up here during suspension movements.
Any problems with the strut mountings are easy reckoned as a bonus during this work [8D]
Then do the Citaerobics to lube the rod and strut slide bearing of course ...

I have just brought 2 new drop links for my xantia, and because I can't leave anything alone decided to take the boots off, To my disgust there was only the tiniest dab of grease in all 4 joints.
The ball is held in a nylon cup with not a drop grease in it, the grease is around the inside of the rubber, I worked the joints in all directions but after about ten minutes there was still no grease on the ball. filled it up manually and the action was 100% better, I put in about ten times the amount of grease that was in originally.
