rear sub-frame bushes

Unread post by holmedog »

Hi all does anybody know how easy or hard it is to replace the rear axle bushes as i think mine have had it.

Ever since i bought the car it has been a little noisey on the back end but has become worse and everytime i go over a bump it sounds like the back end is about to fall off

Any advice would be most appreciated

Hi Mark,

I'll bet you a tank of petrol it's the old Activa Achilles Heel: the rear ram bush.

They are short-lived and kick up a heck of a racketn when they wear...

New ones cost £150. Here's how to make one for pennies :D

Is this an easy enough job to do whilst the ram is still on the car.

Have had a quick look at your link :) And looked at also how to take the ram off which looks rather :? Rather complicated.

But looks easy  enough to get access to the bushes. Is this the case or am i being a little presumptious.

Yes, it can be done on the car no problem at all Mark. Follow the first part of the ram removal guide but don't disturb the top mounting. Remove the lower eye bolt and allow the ram to swing forwards out of its yoke. You may need to do some judicious jacking up and down of the rear suspension to get the ram eye to clear the yoke...

There will then be room to get a bolt and mandrels (as described on the website) to extract the old bush and install the replacement.

The original bush is a pretty tight fit in the ram eye.
