Clutch Slip

Unread post by fifth_cit »

Today whilst joining the motorway traffic, I had to accelerate fairly quickly from about 50 in 4th gear and felt / heard the clutch slip. I was so shocked I did it again later on and it slipped again. As anyone else experienced this ?
The car is an 08 C5 tourer 2.0 litre hdi 138 with 25k on the clock and I guess is the same engine and gearbox as fitted to the facelift C5.

I have never had a clutch go on me before !

regards

sounds exactly the same issue I am having, 58 plate 2.0 hdi saloon 30k miles. It sometimes happens in 3rd also for me but is fairly repeatable in 4th from low revs, 1800-2500...not smooth acceleration, revs race away then come back.

I am putting mine into dealers next week

Yep, take it back to the dealers and get them to inspect it. Should last a little longer than 25K!

My 05 C5 with the same engine (2.0 HDI 16v 138PS) had a new clutch at 83k miles.

25k is not a lot of miles for a clutch, the one I replaced in my first Xantia lasted until 149.5k miles and was replaced because the springs in the pressure plate became loose, not because the friction plate was worn!

Badish news lads - same happened my 09 with 26K miles on it a few times late last year - a while later (weeks) while changing gear I knew something happened and there came a rattle into the gearbox. Rattle was quite bad - car was vibrating at tick over and could feel the pulsing through the clutch pedal. Was bringing it back to the dealer and all of a sudden it all stopped rattling again (had done maybe 250 miles since it all started). Dealer did the DMF under warranty.

Try as I may I have not been able to recreate the problem for me let alone the dealers.

My brother has a C5 VTR+ saloon and his clutch also slips occasionally. His has been into the dealers but the could not make it slip. I will be going out with the caravan soon so that will give it a test.

same here, dropped the car at the dealers today, but on the way there couldn't recreate it !!

I happens more often when there is 3 people in the car though so the extra weight may have something to do with it.....

we'll see what they say

...well car needs new clutch...at 30k miles !!?!? dealer will replace it under "goodwill" as apparently clutch is only covered under warratny to 6k miles !!

I am sorry but this is the most unreliable car I have ever had in my life and it will be up for sale ASAP.... :(

No need to be sorry, us FCF members don't actually make the cars

That is unfortunate though, a clutch should last longer than that, but credit to your dealer, as ive heard many other manufacturers dragging their feet under such warranty claims. Most requiring the owner to pay for inspection and then if a fault is found the repairs will be covered, if its found to be wear and tear the owner will have to foot the bill.

Have you had many other problems with your C5III?

Is it an early model and therefore might be more prone to niggling faults than the later ones?

So there are more reasons to stick with the 'French' C5!

If you do decide to sell it once the clutch is replaced, what do you think you will replace it with?

It might be plain sailing once its repaired though, then it would be a shame to sell ...

good point, there is 6 months warranty left so I'll run it for a while and see how it goes. I really like the car but I need it to be reliable ! I though Citroen had gotten its act together as well....
