A quick clutch question
Can anybody give me a ballpark on what it might cost (at a small independent-type garage) to fit a new clutch to a Xsara TD?

No, not yet, but a couple I have considered will need clutches sooner rather than later. Both TD's. Economy is a factor, you see.
It's for my wife to use for the regular short/medium runs we have to do. Finding a good ZX is getting hard. Mind you an affordable TD BX is even harder these days. Thing is, if I find one worth keeping for a while, and get the clutch etc. done, it'll be very suitable as a family runabout. I know the Xsara's bland, but it's still a Citroen - and with the TD XUD9, hopefully 'old-school' dependable.

For a reliable and easy to keep car my money would go on the Xsara 1.9D/TD over a ZX. Zxs dont have a good record for rot and are getting thin on the ground, plus the extra features and safety kit on the Xsara is a bonus.
I like Xsaras, underrated in my opinion. Tend to be good and reliable cars.

my previous workshop landlord does cylinder head work for a liveing,
so when i had the head off to sort the gasket he gasflowed it for a fee,
the car used to be economical before but after it was portted, it would drive at 30mph round town in 4th gear,
so this made her even more frugal,
and she had a lot more get up and go not that she was slow before hand,
not much more top end though,
regards malcolm

Ideally I would like a Xsara 1.9TD. You are right, the ZX is thin on the ground (and hasn't fared as well as the BX over the years?)...
So come March I think I'll be on the look out.
Now, because I'm unfamiliar; would they have done a non-metallic bright red?

They certainly did do a non-metallic solid red colour, in the mk1 shape, not sure about the mk2, dont remember seeing them.
I was really tempted by a low mileage 1.9TD VSX Xsara in bright red with leather interior last year, it looked excellent.
