Leather seat heaters

Usually I don't get any life out of the seat on the car I drive so it's heating
elements are knackered. A newly purchased Exclusive has a different odd
problem I've not seen before so I'll run this past you guys to see if this is
a known issue.

Of the x2 front seats the passenger one works well - in fact too well. It heats
merrily to a noticeably hot level no matter what the switch on the console is
showing. Is this the switch not working properly. According to the handbook
"the seat temperature is regulated automatically". What does that mean!?

The driver's seat can be very hot and at other times only lukewarm despite
being turned to the max so almost the opposite situation with the passenger
seat - do I try swapping both seat heater switches!?

Any suggestions. Leather seats are totally crap on a cold minus temperature
start to the day without seat heaters - I far prefer the velour but am not
keen to tip the whole interior out and swap it for a s2 Activa set as it's a
cream colour.

hi Andrew, if they are M2 electric leather seats they are the dogs

yes prise the switches out and swap them over, will take about 30 seconds..

both of mine are cold, and it's a shame in winter I may pull them out soon and take a look..

If you want the S2 velour, the cream would go nicely in my Emerald Green Activa!



I love the heated seats in the Coupé. I just hope the elements work in the tan leather interior I have for it. I don't relish trying to swap the elements.

Our XM even has heated rear seats! My boy is addicted to them.

Although they don't regulate and turn down like the seats in my other car.

Well. That didn't work - or rather, swapping the switches made no difference
and the passenger seat is still superheated even when switched off to the
point that passengers don't want to sit on it!

This needs sorting as I won't be able to bear all the hysteria about it for
much longer or use it when the weather eventually does get warmer for
the sporadic 16 days over the period we call "Summer".

Looks like I'll need to disconnect the seat electrics on the passenger
though the driver's seat will have broken elements in it although that
doesn't quite explain how it got to near melting temperature once
last week. Cannot say I notice what it seems to do as the temperature
isn't usually that noticeable.

Is there a heater thermostat in the seat itself?

This evening, I needed to unplug both the seat heater on/variable switch and
the loom plug onto the seat to stop frying a passenger that wasn't a big fan
of maximum heat - personally I wouldn't mind if I could get the driver's seat
to do this but heyho.

I've left what I believe to be the orange and green pretensioner / airbag feeds
and undone the larger black multi plug - is this correct? Is teher a way of
checking just what the Hell's going on with the seat - is there a thermostat
and why does it run on what feels like MORE than maximum even when it's
switched off?

Silly leather seats - wouldn't have this problem with velour.
Higher spec = just a whole lot more to go wrong and irritate...

I've just put a tan leather interior into my Coupé and lo and behold - the driver's seat heater doesn't work. The base pad has gone and as the Coupé's pads run in series, this has caused the backrest to stop working too.

I've stripped down my original black leather seat and will be swapping the pads over, I'll repair the broken one and stick that in the black seat.

I've even bought some hog ring pliers to put it back together.

walking on a heated floor in bare feet can give you chillblains doesn't sitting in a heated seat give you chillblains in your dangly bits?

I've now swapped the heater pads between seats and have continuity on the loom so should have heat when it goes back in tomorrow. The old pad is out and the break can be seen clearly and is easily repairable. This will then go into the old seat.

Hi Andrew, did you ever resolve the super heated seat problem? I seem to have the same problem as the plugs were all disconnected when I bought the car a few weeks ago and obviously it didn’t work. Plugged them in and the seat went super hot even with the switch disconnected and no keys in the ignition. Have had to disconnect again as it drains the battery in about half an hour. Would love to know if anyone can help.
