Woooohooooo after talking to renaault i found out that the cause of the common problem is the originall plug connected to the resistor is of substandard quality and if you replace it before it takes out the resistor you can save a fortune so i purchased one that they have posted on ebay at £40.00 and fitted it myself thismorning.
If you take the plastic surround away from the instrument binicle you can reach far enough in to disconect the plug then very carefully split the insulation tape holding all the wires together it gives you enough wire then to pull the plug through the hole.
Youll need to snip some off the wires on the new loom as they are not needed if your using the originall resistor and just patch the new loom onto the originall one using the connectors provided and heypresto no more messing about behind the dash to get the heater to work.
Tho whole job should take no more than half hour ( provided your not hung over ).
If anyone needs to do this job and has any questions please feel free to ask.

Is this on a Scenic by any chance? Because they have the same problem (along with thousands of others!
).
I got rid of mine because the electronics were an absolute pain.
A fellow at work has the same problem on an 06 plate. I told him about this fix but he is insisting on having the proper job done at over £500! durr! However he's chuffed to bits because Renault have agreed to pay half the cost which works out at £270. This includes dropping all the dash, repairing the loom and fitting a new resistor pack. He can't afford this at the moment so is driving round with no heater!
Takes all sorts!

Yes this on a scenic 56 plate if his heater has stopped working alltogether and wiggling the wires behind the Digitall panell doesnt get it going again then the faulty plug will have taken its toll on the resistor which will result in the dash needing to come out but if he can get it going by messing with the wires then i would recomend he just replaces the loom for £40.00 and saves himself a fortune allthough fair play for getting renault to pay some towards the repair. Personally id try and get them to pay the lot as this is such a common fault. Ive heard of people sending theire old faulty unit to VOSA and they will get in touch with renault forcing them to pay back for the repair.
