1.4 HDi questions

Just general questions, rather than vehicle specific.

Can someone:

Tell me if these have a DMF ? (hopefully not!)

Provide an exploded view of one ? (just a basic view will be fine)

I assume they are just 8 valve heads and nothing silly ? (Andy is not a fan of an excess of valves)

I don't have any tech data on them. My Pug stuff stops before the 206 1.4 HDi appeared. The only thing I can recall is some used to suffer with poor plastic fuel pipes going porous (around the back of the head) resulting in a lack of starting. Easily fixed with replacement pipes though I guess, although that problem is probably gone now, I suspect it was the very early ones that did this.

Posting in the Citroën area as this is a general 1.4HDi question rather than vehicle specific, I would just like to increase my knowledge a little bit, as this engine has been out since about 03 at a guess ?

Although I (mostly) found what I needed.

Nice compact unit anyway, front (!) mounted turbo. First glance and it looks like its (vaguely) based on the TU. Still need to determine if they have a DMF though, more research needed.

I had a 16 valve one. You dont want one of those.
Mine was a C3 52 plate, Probably bought in November, I think they came out that summer.

Oh I did read up a bit, I think the 16valve units are no longer made (in 1.4 guise) as they could not meet the later, newer emission limits.

As far as I am aware, the 8valve unit did.

More research needed, although I'm 50/50 on getting one anyway and it will be a while at least...

a family member has the 8v 1.4 in a van, and its fine. none of the problems I had with the 16v.

Ah. Yes I would not entertain the 16v unit myself, just excess complexity I think.

Actually do these little HDi's have the coolant heater ? , I guess for very cold climates they do but the UK ones might not (as its going to warm quicker than the 2.0 units) , the 'eberspacher' type heater fitted to 'warm' the coolant I mean.

Is it in a 206 that your considering?

2002 was when the 1.4HDi 8v was released, its also used in the Ford Fiestas from a similar time.

There are many 206 HDi 1.4s around, identified by the HDi badge on the rear with a green 'i'. All silver badges are the 2.0HDi 90 and a red i is the 1.6HDi.

I had a 2.0HDi 90 206 for a while, it was a good car, drove well and performed well too.

1.4HDis do meet the later emissions regs, its £30 a year to tax! Im not sure if its still made now, but it was until very recently if not.

Yes it was the 206 I would be considering, or possibly a Citroen, I'm not really sure though which one. I should research which models had this unit, C2 maybe as I don't feel the need for a larger car again. Although having driven a lot of 206's a few years ago (I was there when it was released) I'm not that keen on the driving position, specifically the pedal angle / height I think is the issue for me.

I do know I do not want one of these already from both here and previous knowledge:

A 16v Hdi unit (1.4 or 1.6)

A 307

It will be a while, as in next year but I like to research a little bit anyway, things may change between now and then but its more things to learn anyway which is always useful.

Am aware of the i

, was not really aware of the silver / red designation though.

Our C3 (a 1.6) doesn't have a coolant heater, but does have an electric cabin heater.

Well, the driving position of the 206 was one of the main reasons i dont have it now. It was mainly the pedal positions that was the problem, they are just so close. I once locked the wheels while doing 30mph, id didnt mean to, i was pressing the clutch to get 4th, but caught the brake and the clutch at the same time!

That really put me off, shame, as the rest of the 206 isnt bad at all. I had excellent fun throwing it around, quite a capable car, especially in a sporty-ish 2.0HDi spec.

The C2 has a much better driving position, just like that of a C3. Pedals are close but not as close as the 206 and they do give enough room. The seating position is much better and quality seems a bit higher too.

C2s are coming down in price, a good diesel can be had for not too much money. High miles dont seem to bother the HDis very much either.

Id go for a C2 SX, which has air con and sliding rear seats - very handy with boot as small as the C2s.

Yes the pedal angle more so for me (short legs)

Although I did not think they were too close (I would guess what you would say about Saxo / 106 pedals then)

C2 does seem a sensible choice but as usual finances and other factors etc. I planned a change last year, but did not so hopefully (after a fresh MOT on the 205 in a few months) I can change. I figure the 205 although not worth much is worth a little more with a new MOT (as I have them done at the main dealer anyway)

Back on topic, I'll have to research C2's

, C3 may be too much money.

While i do like Saxos, they drive nicely, the pedals are very close. I can get used to them but i prefer more room around my feet. Almost everyone who got into our old Saxo to drive it would stall, as they were trying to make it go by pressing on the wheel arch

Well, the C3 was out before the C2, so you might be surprised by their values.

Looking on autotrader there, a C3 HDi can be had for around £2000 with around 100-130K miles. The C2 requires more money, with none under £2000, more around £2500-£3000.

The 16v HDi 1.4 was available in the SX and Exclusive spec and should be avoided. However the SX was also available with the 1.4 70bhp HDi, and thats the most common. LX is a common spec in the C3, its got a good list of equipment but it does without AC. Desires do have it and are based on the LX.

206s are better value than both the little Cs.

Dare i ask, what's wrong with 307s?

Pretty sure there's not a DMF on the 1.4hdi as the 307/308 hdi90 has'nt (I've done a few of those ), but the Hdi110 has. Can't be 100% though.

Definitely No DMF on the 1.4HDi - as FC says DMF on 110bhp 1.6HDi not on 90bhp.
