Thanks for all the information you gave me on the Peugeot forum, it has been very helpful.
Another question: Wht's are the differences between the 90hp and 110hp engines, is it just an intercooler - or is there more. I have noticed the the 90hp cars seem much cheaper than the 110, so you know what's going through my mind don't you
ECU's will be programmed different, the inlet manifold is different and the turbo unit COMPLETE is different...but other eise, as in fuel system, they are the same.. The 90bhp uses the old XUD7 TD Lump Crank, and the 110bhp uses the XUD9 TD Lump.. Though both CC's are the same at 1997cc.. Ive got a HDi engine, inside out break down link somewhere..
Those few things PLUS the intercooler is all thats different as I prooved this by fitting a HDi 90 engine with a 110 bhp Inlet and Turbo and put it in a Xantia, and its sice done 120k!
The price difference will also tell you, 110bhp's ARE the better choice, they are better on fuel having the intercooler makes them more efficient! Peter, GO for the 110bhp... like my Dad, he always thought the more power the more fuel used... This may very well be the case with Petrol engines, but with DERV's its not, as far as Xantias go, the 110bhp's are better on fuel then the 90bhp ones... Its also known a tuning box which lifts power, can also improove MPG even further!

110 comes wih uprated gear box, clutch, drive shafts and brakes, so even if a 90 is uprated to a 110 it will still not BE a 110 IYSWIM!! Note that many listed on autotrader are incorrectly tagged - the only sure way to tell is to look for the second air pipe over the engine (present on 110 only), or check the VIN - letters 6 to 8 or so give the engine code - RHZ is 110. Buy a 110 - I gurantee you won't regret it....
I thought there would be more to it, thanks for the info anyway. There does seem to be quite an appreciable difference in price with the 406's but I expect I will find one eventually. As usual all the cheap ones seem to be at the opposite end of the country. The one I looked at yesterday is up to £950 with still a day to go, someones not going to be very happy.
Can a HDi110 engine/turbo be fitted into a 90hp TD Xant bodyshell without
reinventing the wheel? What's needed altogether off the HDi donor and needs
changing on the TD recipient? Would an AL4 work with a HDi engine?
Another good thing about the 110 is that it can be easily remapped to 130/136bhp without any problems if done correctly and depending on the age of the car will still qualify for sub 150g/km tax.

Well, you could I suppose...but you'd need (at least!):
Engine, gear box, clutch hydrualics complete (inc clutch pedal maybe); gear change cables / lever complete; wiring looms; ECU; body computer (maybe to get over any problems with immobilisers); fuel tank (maybe?); in tank pump; wiring to said pump; large relay that controls that pump; fuel lines; fuel cooler; radiator; various hoses around the engine bay; intercooler; various brackets; engine mounts (and even then you might have to mod the OS inner wing to take the torque reaction link mount); steering rack; hubs; shafts; front brakes.
So, a complete car really. It would be a LOT easier to just buy a 110 in the first place!
Richard,
fuel tanks and lines are just about the same, layout under the bonnet slightly different, but under the car no change... but for 110's pretty much all your list you said... :-p....
HDi 90's are a lot more XUD9te identical... as in gearbox, rack, exhaust etc
How sad is this eh....

It's me again, I have the choice of a 1999 or 2001, 406, both 110 hp, the same price and colour! What are the advantages of one over the other, apart from the road tax being cheaper on the 01. What is the easiest way to tell the 110, the presence of an intercooler?
