Xantia clonk under braking

Unread post by andya »

Hi All
I have a 95 Xantia diesel which clonks from the front under hard braking. Any ideas?
Cheers

A clonk from the front under hard braking? Could be that dog you were trying to avoid[:D].
You don't mention if the clonk is a one-off or a series of vibrations. And is it only hard braking? There are many things which can cause such a noise. Worn cv joints, suspension/steering bushes, engine mounts etc. I assume you have done a good visual check? Worn or broken engine mounts can be hard to spot. With caution, try using a wooden lever against the bulkhead and also try a jack (using a wooden batten for protection) under the sump. An assistant is (usually) helpful. I'm sure there a many forum members who will have greater insight if you provide more specifics.
Good luck.

Hi, my Clio was doing this, a fairly loud single clunk when I braked quite heavily and only when braking, no noise at other times. Turned out to be the lower suspension struts, shaped like wishbones. The bushes had worn and become soft.
Somewhere to start...
All the best,
James
