A Nasty Dilema

Post by admiral51 »

Hi All

As some of you will know i currently run 2 Xantias and have now aquired a 3rd which is definitley going to to sold

My dilema is that i dont need 2 big cars as SWMBO only does about 80 miles a week and she drives the VSX.

Im loathe to part with either of them but i have been offered a renault clio on a R plate for next to nothing and i think this will suit SWMBO and her commuting better, but which Xantia should i part with :? :?

Ive spent a fair bit on the 2.1TD,its had new cambelt, aux belt tensioners and spring + water pump and fuel pump(not so expensive...cheers Jim  ) but the VSX has been a labour of love and served me well on my recent trip to Scotland and that has also had new aux belt, cambelt and water pump, new front discs and pads etc and i promised Andrew i would put the VSX on the road and use it so feel a bit guilty in possably selling it
Id love to keep them both but i think head must rule heart now so any ideas from you folks would be much appreciated 8-) 8-)

Both have atleast 10 months test and 4 months tax so any ideas on which one to keep and poss price i could achieve :)

Gosh, that's always a difficult one Colin...

Keep the VSX. That's the one you've really put your heart into and that's had all the TLC and is rare. You'll never replace it whereas the 2.1TD you could if you ever wanted to..

That's where I'd go. Keep the VSX...

Like me, the one I couldn't bear to part with is my old faithful MK1 V6. I've put far too much into it...

The 2.1TD is OK now is it?

the solution is simple.

1. become a mormon
2. get a second wife who drives a lot and has a well paid job
3. give her the 2.1TD
4. explain to your first wife

I've got an alternative solution. Arrange to stable the Xantias while you babysit a '67 Ford Galaxie and a '71 Cadillac Fleetwood (or Lincoln Continental) for a week or three.

After this period, Mrs Admiral will be so happy to go back to her small, economical Xantia.

That's easy, you keep the one which doesn't want you to get rid of a xantia :)

Very true, 80 miles is very little, i do around 400-450 a week, sometimes more.

Is running a petrol Xantia for 80 miles a week very costly? I guess with the extra tax over a smaller engined car and slightly more insurance it will stack up. No doubt a tiny petrol engine will be better on fuel for short journeys too.

Me being a diesel person id probably choose the 2.1TD as the one to keep.

Keep them both and don't bother with the Clio. I would generally advise that you don't swap one old car for another. You might just be inheriting a load of trouble and getting rid of a car that you know. The mark 1 Clio is prone to rust and wasn't a particularly well made little car. Do your sums on how much petrol you think you might save, I suspect it won't work out to be worth while given the low mileage.

I would agree with that advice, better the car you know, you might just get one with lots of problems.

Years back we were looking at 1.2 Clios for a first car, however after discovering many with rotten boot floors and headgasket failures we gave up and bought something else.

You know Xantias are very solid cars (better in a bump too no doubt) and you know the one you have. Id keep it but if its lower running costs your after be careful what you choose.

Ally, I too agree fully. You know your cars are good and what you might spend getting the Clio up to scratch might be more than fuel for the Xantias in the long run.

Colin, I'm taking my Mk2 V6 off the road for winter and storing it. Can you not do the same if necessary?

You might always regret selling either of them.

Well thanks for all your replies amd suggestions :) :)

Unable to afford 1 SWMBO so getting another is out of the question

The dilema has infact been resolved :) :)

SWMBO had a little test drive of the Clio today. She said it is a nice little car and nothing else all the way home.
Once inside she told me that if we bought the Clio i would be driving it as shes not parting with the VSX so it looks like we are keeping both Xantias as im not giving up the 2.1TD for a tiny Clio :D :D

Absolutely fine Jim :D :D

Not had a single problem relating to the rattle or the fuel guage going haywire since i got it back,my only regret is that its a MK2 not a MK1 firmly coming down in the MK1 is best camp

Colin, that's brilliant on both counts. I'm delighted :D :D

My old dad always says that once you've enjoyed the delights of a larger car a little one just won't do...

I'd go so far to say that once you've driven a hydraulic Citroen for a while, nothing else will do...

MK1s. I quite agree
