help please unkonw part xantia sx 98

hi could you help me i have a xantia sx 98 i have found the part shown in picture hanging back of engine with pipes off can anybody help with what this is and dose were it fits to and pipes go to ect the car starts and runs fine but
lot of travel on brake pedel and have stop light coming on and off

be aware there's often a "pipe to nowhere" attached to the top of fluid resevoirs to allow excess fluid to drain away if it rises over a certain level as it expands.

The brake travel and stop light suggests you're low on LHM fluid in the relevant reservoir - on my Xantia (2.0 litre petrol 98 sx) this was situated in at the far rear/righthand corner as you look atthe engine from the front.

Not necceseraly, the long travel could ALSO indicate air trapped in the system.... do the brakes suddenly come on sharply when you press the brake???

The pedal should nothing but a breath of air to apply the brakes...

IF that pipe at the rear is the said pipe from the LHM tank, its not strickly an over flow pipe, more a breather pipe ontop of the tank, the pipe should be fitted to the filler cap on top of the tank....

Ahhhhhhhhh its the Cold start Vaccum pipe via the vacuum pump and the two EGR valves, that sit to the left of the LHM tank...

Its starting aid, the pipe has split off one of the spigots...

Unless your car was set on high when that photo was taken, your LHM level is low.
The orange disc should be between the two red lines when the car is on high.

I would start with what Xac has already suggested

and after that I would try brake bleeding, especially rear brake lines might have have air packed in the pipes.

Oh, and check the carpet near your brake pedal is not wringing wet with hydraulic oil.

The bracket that the electrovalves are on is fixed in place by the left hand nut at the back of the LHM resevoir.

One electrovalve (I believe the blue one) goes to your EGR so leaving it disconnected is for the best.
The other controls your fast idle, I'd imagine your car is idling just under 1000rpm right?
On the back right hand side of the pump is a black disc with a cable coming out the left side and spiggot on the right hand side. If you connect the right electrovalve to it, and the electrovalve is working, then when the engine is warm enough your idle will drop to around 850rpm.
It is not a problem to have them disconnected and quite often by now the fast idle electrovalve has failed through use over the last 10+ years.

On the right hand side of the cam is the vacuum pump, you can see it in the left of your photo.
Off the front is a black connector, and the pipe should run from that to the electrovalves.
