Here, Here!

Not printer specific, but for any ink-jet printer with a separate print head and ink tanks (like most fairly recent Epsons and Canons): remove the print head and stand it nozzle-face down on a small square of thick kitchen roll or tissue soaked in iso-propyl alcohol (IPA) a.k.a. disk cleaner standing in a small container, may need to repeat several times to persuade all the old ink to leak out. Do not dry before replacing in printer, then do a print-head cleaning cycle and test.

I remember being told (about 5 or 6 years ago) some printer manufacturers sold the printers at cost or near cost, with most profits being made on consumables (ink mainly)

This was before the explosion of third party refill kits though.

That is very true of almost all but the £200+ units.

Have a look at some laser printers for example.
I have a Samsung CLP315-w that is now out of use as the replacement drum costs as much as the printer first did. And i know the drum still has life in it its just the printer has counted it has done 12000 pages and had enough.
The toners are the same, £40 each usually though i have bought refill kits for them and topped them up and get another 3 uses out of them.

I have an HP too - tried Cartridgeworld and they were a disaster.
Retired it now, tried to take it to bits, got stuck and left it for a while, lost all the bits I had removed. It's in the cupboard waiting to go in the bin now.

Bought a Brother printer/scanner/copier that is OK, cartridges £10 for a set of four.
My usual supplier was closed so bought some from Amazon. Not so good, colours are subdued, particularly reds.

Have another P/S/P in the cupboard that came with a computer I bought last year, not sure what make it is, must see if it works - one day :)
The HP was a good printer if rather old now.

Personally I've had it with inkjets. Working in a school they get treated the very worst way possible by leaving them unused for long periods of time (over the school holidays) allowing them plenty of time to dry out!

At homes, because I have printers in two different countries, I have now moved over to laser printers. They get left for long (up to 2 months) periods and, after being allowed to warm up, produce excellent copies after an initial overall greyness has worked its way out.

Yes, they're not as good as an inkjet for colour photos but, hey, take your files to the shops to get those printed.
As I get older I think a lot about the hereafter - I go into a room and then wonder what I'm here after.

Never had one dry out.
I ruined my HP through sheer dumnity.
Refilled the cartridges but failed to reseal the cyan one, which leaked into the printer then out onto the desk and from there just about everywhere.

Son in law has gone through several Epsons that have dried out though. At least with an HP there is no chance of that as the print heads are in the cartridges - which accounts for the price - mine were £57 a pair last time I bought any.
As others have noted, the price of a new printer.

Mine is safe, i made sure when we went back to ink that the heads were a seperate item and being HP the slightly non-consumable bits i can get a bit cheaper as well should i need to.

The samsung was nice but just peeved me when just after 12months warranty was up the drum decided it was the end of the day..

Typical!
My daughter's Brother Laser printer did that at 3am, just as we commenced printing 3 copies of her 167 page dissertation that had to be handed in the following day.

That was fun, made it with five minutes to spare 8-)

Had a HP all in one.
5 A4 photos and it was time for new ink.
Binned it and got an Epson SX200, prints beautifully and the ink is reasonable at a full set for £30ish.

That is one of their sneakier tricks, the cartridges contain only a small amount of ink in most new printers, forcing you to buy more almost straight away.

My HP lasted a year before running dry first time though.
