My aircon only operates on the auto setting. I have lost the ability to mannually select blower speed and to turn it off. I took off the facing plate & unscrewed the front retaining screws but encountered a fair bit of resistance as I was trying to tug it out from the console . Is there something else holding it or is it just a question of yanking beyond the point of what seems decent?
Does anyone know whether these things are serviceable or able to be bypassed?

The unit is held in with three Bowden cables that operate the flaps. You really don't want to disconnect these if you can help it..
Normally, if you remove the wireless and the surround, you'll have sufficient access to it as the unit will come out far enough on its cables to be worked on.
This unit is not even removed when removing the dash to do a heater matrix.
Are you sure it's the slider? Is the blower working normally in AUTO or is it just running at full speed in all slider positions?
If so, it is possible your speed regulator module is the cause of the problem and not the slider.

Xantia Mk 1 blower control
Thanks for that Clogzz . So it's back to the Console unit. What's the trick to pulling off the cables?

The fault I had was the speed cursor falling out.
You can check for that without detaching the cables, as they’re indeed something to avoid, and hello to Jim, who must have been there.
The picture shows the underside of the panel, with the speed cursor gear at right.
If it’s firmly in its place, high up and straight, meaning not askew, you can reassemble because the fault won’t be in the control panel.
The recirculation cable removal is from the top, and to do first because it’s the shortest cable, and you can see where and how the outer cable housing is pushed against a stop in the white plastic, then held down with a spring clamp.
The inner cable end slots into the metal gear that you turn with the slider for easiest access.
The airflow cable is at top left, and removal is like for the recirculation cable.
The temperature slider also operates a cable underneath the air flow gear.
You can see half of the end of it under the wire below the left black gear.
Seeing is doing, and always turn the gears with the sliders to improve access to the cable ends.
And again, if the speed slider gear at right is in its place and turning straight, the fault is somewhere else … not in the control panel.
Enjoy the contortions.
