Extremely unusual ZX problem

Unread post by arry_b »

I've just done 1000 miles in 48 hours in my ZX and nothing has dropped off or broken. There were no knocks, the suspension is still working, it didn't lose any water or oil.
The heater matrix didn't burst and the head gasket is still intact.
Would punching a few holes in the radiator or filling the engine with builders sand help? [;)]

Just give it another 1000 miles and it'll die. Or wait till you decide to sell it and then it'll definitely develop some weird incurable fault :-)

People round here seem to think the ZX is unreliable....mines done 97,000miles and the last problem i had was a sticky rear brake caliper at about 75,000 miles, and before that i think it was a track rod end at about 60,000miles, which was about 5 years ago just a couple of weeks after i bought the car.
Its been the most reliable thing i've ever owned.

Hi James, didn't get as far as Dartmoor. Did Brum, Newcastle, Leeds, London, Slough (yuk) then home plus a bit of pottering around between. I seem to be doing this type of run every week at the moment, and I'm struggling to fault the car at all. The worst thing I can think of is that AM radio reception breaks up a bit near Swindon on the M4. Not bad for an old bus is it!

I did 900 miles in my BX TD over one weekend in 2001 (Reading - Glasgow and back, plus a bit of running around. No probs at all (as usual!).
10 miles later the alternator seized up - whilst my wife was driving it.... Sooooo, watch out, it might bite back!

I know the feeling. My Zx hasn't broken down for ages until yesterday when it made a funny noise, but apart from that it's ok 146k and still going.

Im still waiting for my ZX to go bang... it does 100 miles a day and i havent washed it since August, just ran out of screenwash today.
oh yes, it developed a hot start problem at 109k miles, solved with some silicone sealent and a piece of hose. now done 127k, probably should change the oil but im after a xantia and i cant sell the zx or the MIL would be upset (she paid for it when last car nicked. TPO!)
Hey ho always the way, if you look after something it bites you in the bum.....
Anyone seeing a grey/white ZX with No 42 on bonnet thats mine... Hello!

Yes, saw that.
Dont get me wrong, i like the ZX, but i like the Xant better. Still i think i will carry on with the destructo test and see just how long it puts up with my <s>use</s>abuse. (please dont anyone think this is a nice car i am abusing, it was owned by one nun and several suicidal lemmings before me and the passenger side is all stoved in from a hit and run Iveco van)

Its not too bad, its certainly put up with my daily abuse. The xant has better suspension for us "caravaners" and general towing types, thats all.

I did north London> Birmingham> Swindon today in my ZX, nice motorway scenary using M40, M42 and M6 to get there then M6, M5 and A419 home. £15 quid of diesel and nothing fell off and no leaks.
Is there anything better for practically no money?? I doubt it.
I let the old girl work up a head of steam down the M5 tonight (no the head gasket hasn't gone) and pissed off some crazy fool in a Golf TDi for many miles.[:o)]

I've done 75,000 in my Volcane TD in 3 years and its never let me down so I suppose you could call it reliable ! it is abused, my partner shouts at me when I go up through the box spinning the wheels in the wet !
I,ve just treated myself to a Xantia VSX TD a few weeks ago as I always fancied one but turn into mild mannered gent when behind the wheel of it !
Think I need a 16V ZX to thrash about instead ! anyone want a VSX Xantia ?
