Possible new grand scenic owner

Unread post by Synergietom »

Hi all i currently run a citroen Xantia but due to lack of seats i am looking at buying an 06 Grand scenic and after reading some reviews on other sites i thought id ask on here if there is anything i should be cautious of. The model im looking at is the 1.9 DCI Dynamique.
Any help would be appreciated.

We had a Scenic II, just the normal 5 seat not Grand, it was the 1.9DCi.

It was a great car, drove quite well and the engine was both lively and economical, the 6 speed box made it an excellent low reving cruiser. However it was not fault-free, which is why we only had it a few years. Had it of been more problem free and had a better reliability reputation we would still have it.

Things to be aware of on 1.9DCi Scenics, check for a crunchy gearbox, as this seems a well known issue and can become notchy and crunchy at low mileage too. Ours was starting at 20K. Tyre wear, our car wore out its rear Michelins in 18K miles (from new) and the fronts lasted a more average 20K miles. Scenics rear beams dont appear to run true, so they wear the tyres out due to them toeing in at the rear. Renault set a tolerance with them, some cars have needed the rear axels replacing.

Also be aware of problems with the 1.9DCi engine itself, its not uncommon for them to eat their way through turbos, even low mileage cars have had major engine problems.

I know of a 54plate Scenic 1.9DCi which is onto its 3rd engine!

Im not saying you will have problems with one, but its things to be aware of and things to check when viewing a car. I really do like the Scenics and as a small MPV the are very nice cars.

Have a good look around on the Renault forum, thats pretty good for tech ninfo on renaults and details issues with the 1.9.

My son just bought a '54 Megane 1.9 DCi :(

At least he says that it is 10x better than the Golf GTi that he px'd for it.

As i say, some do go on and on with little problems, but its sometimes nice to be aware of any reputation a car or engine might have. The Renault forum is where ive picked up my disliking for the 1.9DCi.

The Meganes are nice cars though and the 1.9 performs very well and gives great MPG. However, we had a 04 Megane, got it at 6 months old, it was traded in for the Scenic after 2 weeks as it was riddled with faults. :( Was your son not going to get a Skoda? Well, best not tell him this then, as French cars are better

As a huge Renault fan myself I'm glad you like the Grand Scénic; However I would never touch a 1.9 dCi no matter what the price.

Both my Renaults have petrol engines for a good reason.

So many people I know would never buy another Renault due to the turbo blowing (sometimes numerous times) on their 1.9 dCi. Recently happened to my friends Mégane as he was joining the motorway. The turbo failing on my bosses 1.9 dCi Laguna led to an engine fire.

The Grand Scénic is a great car. My aunt and uncle have an 06 2.0 VVT Automatic. Great car but watch out for dodgy key cards, electric window failure and the digital dash has been on Watchdog for completely failing.

Keep us updated :)
French is best.

That was my son in law - just been moving them down to Teeside today. He'll need an estate for all his Ikea purchases then his DIY ones (he already has the new house remodeled in his head) :) Can't get much in an Alfa GT Cloverleaf :)

The problem is, if you stick with the Petrols you either have to go for the 1.6, which im sure will be a bit gutless in a Grand Scenic, especially if filled with 7 people, or go for the 2.0, which im sure wont be great on fuel.

Of course there is always the 1.5DCI, which is a bit less problematic than the 1.9, but again small engine in a big car.

During the time we had our Scenic, it had to go in for three recalls, all of which seemed quite worrying to me. The first was for the windows, modified clips needed to be fitted to the side windows to stop them falling into the doors. Then the rear seatbelts had to be removed and the bolts loctited in place, as they had been known to come loose (on a five star car!!) and finally the brake pedal was inspected for cracking, excellent!

Despite that i still think they are a nice car, but i dont think id ever recommend one to anyone. However there are loads around and they can't be all bad, surely.

My choice of a mid sized MPV would be a C4 Grand Picasso, which are great cars and use very nice diesel engines. Though they are newer than Scenics and hold their value much better, so are not as cheap.

thanks for the response guys i actually tested a 1.5 dci version and it was gutless so iwhent for the 1.9 its an ex BT fleet car with full service history as i baught the car through a finance company i Phoned the BT depot that had it originally and they confirmed its allready had any common faults fixed and to be honest i was originlly looking for a C4 but i couldnt get the finance however in a sense im glad i ended up with the scenic as the insurance is cheaper and to be fair it is a very nice car allthough its the first post 2000 car ive ever owned and i could be just enjoying the little luxuries.
