Whatever happened to Rum Baba's?

Post by andmcit »

Talking about getting Bee's in bonnets: ;)

BRING BACK RUM BABA'S NOW!!

Image

A FEAST FOR THE EYES BUT IT SHOULD BE A FEAST FOR THE TUM TOO!

Seemingly now only a French delicacy we can't get over here any more...

http://www2.sainsburys.co.uk/YourIdeas/ ... ageIndex=7

My family greatly mourns their passing having been big fans for years
and I must admit life would be so much better were they reintroduced!
I recall the supermarkets were all complicit in downsizing the portions
and reduced the totally gorgeous syrupy rum but M&S used to make
superb ones...

Looks like Sainsbury's need some active lobbying to get their buyers to
try them again! ;) Either that on your local MP!?

(I said active not Activa - clever predictive knows I like typing Activa!)

I voted "Bring them back" as I am completely unfamiliar with them and would like to at least sample one - probably suicide by cake but it isn't a bad way to go :P

I fear I must be getting too old... :?

Trust me; if you've tried them you'd want them back. Dig out a Rhum Baba
in the Patisserie of Auchen on your travels over the Channel.

This kicked off where my whole family gathered for a birthday and my sister
and I both recalled how fantastic these were with them being a real treat as
kids! Even where my sister was small she'd be allowed one notwithstanding
the rum syrup! We'd probably have 'gestapo' doo-gooders from the council
pitching their noses in today. They're NOT sickly really but certainly rich
with the rum syrup soaked into light sponge and cream. Not too big or
fattening either - they tended to be 3-4" diameter on the sponge base.

Never mind. Bloody supermarkets are always dumbing down our choice
giving us what they want us to have. Ever been to a newly opened one and
been impressed by it's range only to see it's stock streamlined a month
later. :(

Maybe a 'proper' bakery? Although many of them now are chains like the supermarkets and have also 'streamlined' their range.

Yep, you're probably right there Steve, the last place we used to get them
was a family small bakery but that couldn't compete with the monolith
chains with their Blitzkrieg approach to expansion and domination
- more convenience possibly but ultimately at our loss!

Not really Greggs thing either. Probably get all neurotic about the rum...

Ogle the one on Wikimedia Commons, for some serious gastronomic p**n: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Rum_baba.jpg

Makes your piccy look like junk food.

Recipe doesn't seem too hard...

Greggs used to be OK fifteen years ago but they are worse than the supermarkets now.
Morrison's would be the most probable place around here, their bakery is a cut above the rest.

addo - that looks almost erotic :) might have acrack at baking later

I agree Adam that picture I posted looks very dry and shiny (fatty) like it's
been fat fried which these weren't but when Googled images showed the
plainest 'as bought in the shop' look rather than some work of gastronomic
art like the link you posted!

Mind, that Wimpy Brown Derby brings back memories too; I remember them!!
Always had a very sweet tooth so can't get enough of this kind of stuff!

Same here but I am expanding rapidly now :( and find that cakes and chocolate make me feel sick now - still like them though.

I like how "pr0n" is replaced by "brainless crap" in the auto-censor.

Oh, and if the colours in that Wimpy thing were reversed, it looks like something you'd step over on the footpath. As Will Self once said: "Food is sh*t waiting to happen"...

In another forum, we targeted one ignorant motormouth by having it replace "454" (the Chevy big block) with "Trabant 2-stroke".

Worked on him almost every other day.
