Facelift Xantias HDI's over TD's?

Post by vince »

Guys ive just found myself looking at facelift HDI Xantias on ebay which got me thinking......

What are the day to day benefits of a facelifted HDI Xantia over a TD earlier one? also what are the mechanical downsides....?

Im thinking...get a non hydractive Xantia with aircon, replace the spheres, get it tip top and keep it clean and tidy...... :-k

HDI is a newer engine, so as you'd expect its a bit quieter, a bit more economical and if you get a 110bhp model, a bit more powerful than the TD too.

The TD is very reliable and the problems it gets are generally simple and cheap to repair e.g. air leaks, glow plugs etc. so the HDI has a hard job to match if for reliability. Whilst the HDI does come close to the TD, it's not quite as reliable as it and you do get problems with the electric fuel pump that the HDI has in the tank (and the TD doesn't have) etc.

I've got a C5 with the next generation of HDI (2.0 HDI 16v) wouldn't go back to the Xantia with a TD.

My HDi is much quieter and quicker (no turbo lag) than my TD and does an extra 7 mpg, so should anything go wrong then the extra fuel savings will have paid for a repair should it be required. For me there's no contest, I just get in and drive my HDi whereas in my TD I have to remind myself of the turbo lag issue such when pulling out from junctions.

Vince sure you know this but , for what it's worth, S2 cars were TD's as well as HDi's/

Thanks John, i figured to move to a facelift then the HDI would be the better bet. I have a TD already :)

I really like the HDi engines and the 2.0 8v is the best of the lot for reliability and simplicity. They generally go on and on with little problems, the worst problem is probably injectors failing but thats quite rare and not a totally loss should it happen.

MPG will be much better than a TD and also it will be more refined and quiet.

I really like the 110 version in my C5, it performs well and ive not had a problem with any HDi engine at the moment. I had the 90 in a 206 which made it a fairly nippy car. No doubt a 90 in a Xantia will perform similar to a 1.9TD but a 110 will be quicker. Ive driven a 110 Xantia and it did suit the engine well in my opinion. Also the Xantias never got the dreaded DMF.

There are some real bargains to be had, certainly worth a punt if thats something your after.

Most S2 Xantias have AC, i think only two models didnt get it in the UK and they were not big sellers. So finding one should be reasonable easy.

I'm biased, I prefer the TD but admit I envy the quietness, power and economy that HDI's bring. But the costs of replacing anything to do with fuelling... no thank you.

Interestingly, some pioneers are replacing the HDI fuel systems with the older mechanical systems for better reliability and power.

After driving mum and dad's 90Hdi's, I'd say definitely get the 110 as the 90s were so gutless and unresponsive I had to rev the nuts off them to get anywhere.
The increased economy of the hdi is of course wiped out by the savings of running on veg if that is an option to you.

Agreed i bought a 90bhp Hdi i couldnt stand how slugish it was so i got rid of her and went back to the TD

Personally i prefer the TD ,But maybe 110bhp might be worth having a look at ?

I would personally get an activa Vince :) you would make a nice minter out of one and as you have the nemo for most trips wouldn't be too bad :)

if you must move to a mk2 then the TD is still good and can easily hit 110bhp if you want it to and still be reliable :)

I have am on off relationship with my Xantia. Some days i think i cant be bothered with it anymore as it needs plenty of little touch up jobs doing to it, and other times i love it.

The problem i have is that all the expensive jobs have been done, clutch, head gasket etc so there is nothing horrible to go wrong (touch wood) and it drives great.

Ive done a list of the things left to do and i reckon they work out cheaper than changing the car and hoping ive bought a good new one.....

Ill finish the car off i reckon and see how i feel then

An activa would work out too heavy on running costs......If i was to do anything nuts it would have to be a V6

LPG then vince :)

Surprised your not running Veg at all on yours as it reduces the cost of fuel a fair bit and smells nice :)
