Hi, welcome to FCF.
Disconnect the handbreak cable at the caliper before trying to flip the caliper up, dead easy it will just pop out.
Other than that as you describe, the Xantia caliper piston is wound in.

Yep, with the handbrake lever off, simply use a lever to swing the actuator
arm on the caliper towards the back of the wheelarch and the end peg is then easily uncoupled.
The locking pin through the caliper that locks it down preventing it from swinging up needs to have an R pin removed and then squarely carefully driven out towards the centreline of the car. When you uncouple the caliper be careful not to unseat the other inboard lever end of the handbrake cable.
A special tool can be purchased for around £20 to wind the piston in when you press it back into the caliper - there is a right handed thread on both sides and whilst toolbox ingenuity can push the piston in, the tool makes life so much easier!

Thanks the car was up for £450 but i got it down to £400 because it needed a radiator and also the people who owned it were moving to canada so they were selling house ect there is also i light scrape on the wheel arch piece near the back door it was on autotrader
since i got it ive done link pins and rad and pads i also got a new back box and ive waxoyled under the car to keep it from rusting it is all solid i did MOT in july and it went straight through got an advisory for front indicator a bit white its on 69 now and due a major service i think to keep it running perfect
i would put some pics up but im new to computers so find it all confusing i do know how to email pics though
thanks sam

i know the milage is true because the 1st owner had it at the dealers for every service until he died then he left it to his daughter and her husband 2nd owners who then took it to their local dealers and kept the reciepts but not got the book stamped but from the reciept service book and MOTS its done between 3-4k per year and i am the 3rd owner

Hi Sam,
Cambelt should be 72000 or 8 years, whichever comes first.!
A 12 year old car that has never been changed!! Don't bear thinking about
Do it now, like yesterday. When they go they never let you know in advance, very expensive.
I did mine at 8 years with 43032 miles on the clock.
My grandaughter's Saxo went at 9 years with 59000 on.£1200 to fix.
Low mileages mean lots of short journeys, which causes faster wear.
Bryan.

DO the belt sooner then the reccomended mileage! AND the water pump for an extra 30 quid far safer! They useually fail after a new belt is fitted! Safer to be then sorry! Wasn't there a point on the twin cam petrol enignes were the belts were breaking before the due belt change?? Around 1997 on the 1800 16v units?
