Is the starter turning ?
Do all the lights on the instrument panel still work (as in you should have the red oil / battery lights and the yellow 'K' light on) when the key is in position 2 ?
Examine fuses under dash (right hand side of steering wheel under dash) and the ones in the engine bay too, box near battery area.
Assuming that's OK, its likely to be the transponder immobilizer. There's a (tiny matchhead almost size) chip in the key body. Its just dark grey or black hard plastic / ceramic.
Carefully (on a table!) look and ensure this is still present. If its missing its trouble.
Assuming it is you can try a little trick at your own risk. Wrap some tape around the key body (the plastic) so it will not fall apart and throw it gently (or drop it) onto the floor. Soft floor or carpet ideal. Then immediately try to start the car with it. If it starts its the transponder aerial usually at fault this is fitted around the ignition barrel , its quite easy to replace. This sounds stupid I know but I've used this 'trick' twice once on a 106 and once on a 406 it does work.

Fuse highly likely. Ignore stuff about key then for the moment, that is unlikely.
Check those under bonnet too.
It might sound obvious but check the battery leads are OK (a broken or loose earth strap (not battery end) where it sits on gearbox or shell will cause this kind of effect.
From memory there's some large fuses around that black box near battery, check them, if all OK and you're sure battery is charged up inspect fuses under dash.

Re: Pug 306 won't start
Just to clarify, does the key actually turn,as normal,or is it stuck?Donfish wrote:Problem is now the key won't

I only ask as my daughters pug 106 ignition barrel broke, leaving it..unturnable,if you see what I mean! I had to pull/knacker the ignition barrel out to bodge a fix..
..and, I thought you'd get some life/dash lights,with a full battery..
it's as if the main battery wire's off/damaged, unless there's a main fuse, as Spider says.
*edit* sorry for late post, I was writing mine as Spider had already replied about battery etc.
