ZX Gear Linkages

Hi
the gear change on my 1992 ZX Aura Diesel was getting a bit stiff and noisy so decided to take the gear linkages etc apart to give it a good clean and grease it all. Having done all that the gear change is much better. However a new rattle has developed which I suspect is something to do with the gear linkages as it was not there before...There seems to be quite a lot of play in the rod coming of the gearstick. Is this play supposed to be there? Should I have used some special kind of grease? Any remedies for this rattle?

As you pop off the gear rods from the balls - the rod ball cups may widen a bit - thus cause rattle.
You have done exactly right to cure the stiff changing.
Try squeese the cup just a bit square on edge - then it will tighten up.

do you mean squeeze the end of the rod that comes off the gear change lever and hooks over the bigger ball?

Yes -
The idea is to make the cup a snug fit on the ball - by sqeesing the cup.

Or just buy some more, they are cheap as chips!
