Xantia backboxes

Unread post by Toby_HDi »

Are there any real differences between the different engines in the way of rear silencers.

The Activa's has now sprung a proper hole and needs replacing, it's gone in the usual place - backbox side of the joint to the centre pipe.

A hunt on Citroen Service reveals the Activa backbox has a different part number to everything else, but I wondered if there were actually any real differences (other than the fact the V6 one has two tailpipes)

Any recommendations as to where to get one?

Thanks
Toby

Jim and I have used these people
http://www.onlineautomotive.co.uk/Produ ... leID=76549

Excellent customer service, Jim and I ordered a V6 exhaust for him and Activa middle section for me, they initially said we could have next day delivery but would have to check stock, called us back not long after, they couldn't get the V6 exhaust until the next day, so delivery would be the day after (wasn't a problem for us). As an appology they waived the delivery charge! :)

Bosal catalogue shows unique part number for 2.0T engines...which rather suggests there must be some difference, as they normally produce the fewest designs they can!

I wonder if they mount differently to the underside of the car or something? Are the prongs that come off backbox in different places??

If I remember rightly, only Activa's have rear anti roll bars don't they?? So it could well be the location of the prongs!

If the rest of the box is still sound, the pipe can be re-joined using your choice of repair compound and reinforcement, as this end of the system doesn't really get hot.
I repaired one using Plastic Padding Leak Fix around a home-made thin aliuminium flange fixed with self-tappers, and it lasted at least two years (I sold the car then - it might still be going...)

Well I grafted an Activa back box onto my V6. I think the big difference seems to be the length and diameter of the inlet pipe. The hangers seems to be the same on them all.

I think they are all "tuned" to the particular engine. I tried a TD back box on a 2.0i and it was awfully resonant at light throttle. The 2.0 turbo might be a bit more forgiving.

You could be right as mine is now very resonant at 2k revs...

Xac, many thanks - have used them before for an Omega exhaust. I see they list the CT box at £70ish and the N/A box around £30, hence why I asked if there was any major differences. I was hoping I'd get away with the cheaper one but it seems I'd have noise issues if I did.

Save the pennies it is then. Many thanks all

Good timing for this thread, I was just about to ask where would be a good place to get one. Mine went along the weld seam at the bottom, it rusted through perhaps by doing short journeys in the middle of the day didn't help.

Looking at the site recommended, are these back boxes resonated to factory spec or just damped?

I would think resonator is more important on an NA car, but I could be wrong

V6's have an anti roll bar for it to go over aswell, its just not as sophisticated as an activa one

Out of interest, how long is the front pipe on your back box?

The one I took off Juliet had a much longer front pipe than the replacement, and consiquently the middle pipe was too short so I had to replace that too.

Whomever replaced the whole exhaust before hadn't fitted the right one.

Here's the thread

Image

The top pile of rust is the wrong one which was fitted when I got Juliet, the bottom one is the correct one from Gareth (originally from Jim's old Activa)

This reminds me, I must fit the straight through pipe to Cassy and a new back box.

I know quik fit will sting you for over a hundred quid if you go to Cats Direct online they will sting you for much much less including a fairly decent quick delivery time.

when I saw the price at www.cats-direct-shop.co.uk £61.20

I nearly went ballistic at the saving I could have made.

youy can also have a cherry bomb made to replace the back box they weld the brackets on for you (custom built) £35.00 but I have no idea what it would sound like on a diesel.

I've used cats direct recently, and they do have good prices and good delivery. I've also used my local motor factor to get a back box for my estate, £60 and got it in the very same day, so I would say give your local factor a go first, it might take a bit longer to get an activa box in, but they should be able to at a good price.
