Last week I came across another compelling reason for (re-)fitting engine under-trays:

04 plate Vauxhall Combo van sent for a service; lower front part of sump is seen to be badly corroded with an oil weep, mechanic pokes with finger, lump of rust falls off - oil all over workshop floor!

One more pot-hole or speed-bump and the engine would have been wrecked!

This is a well-known and common problem with the 1.7D engine in Combos and Astras. Vauxhall don't fit an undertray so the front face of the sump gets salt-blasted every winter. New sumps are readily available and 'only' about £90, but the killer is the 4 hours labour to fit; (well-rusted) front exhaust section to get off then gearbox out.

Maybe Xantia sumps are thicker and/or less vulnerable, but I'm not prepared to risk the experiment.
