xantia HDI110 "Wooshing" sound

hiya,

1999 xantia hdi110

driving last night and the engine management light came on, limited to 2.8k revs down on power....

similar symptoms to MAF (2 weeks ago)

I pull over stop and restart the engine, all is well with the revs.

Pull away and basically there is a "wooshing" sound from the N/S/F and the car seems to be a little down on power (although i wasnt pushing it)

sounds like a boost pipe has split to me but when i got home (found the barn had been broken into

) had a look at the boost pipe under the engine and can see nothing wrong with it. I can't see anything wrong with the boost pipes at all and the hose on the top of the engine gets pressure when the engine is revved (while squeezing)

is there anything i should look for? the EML is still on

The sound you describe would seem to indicate air escaping under pressure so a further examination of the pipe work after the turbo outlet is needed
Check the connections to the intercooler and the intercooler itself.

It could be a broken vacuum pipe - you may get a sucking noise as it sucks air in, and the ECU will lose control of the boost solenoid hence an overboost condition, limp mode and EML on. The vac pump is on the gearbox end of the cam shaft, which ties in with the NSF noise location...

The usual place for the pipe to come off is right at the turbo.

ok plot thickens,

i can't see anything wrong with the pipework

the EML has gone off, if you drive with the windows open you can't hear the noise.

with the car stationary it doesnt make the noise. the turbo whine is a lot more noticeable now than i've notcied before

No as so on HDi's as they have a 10mm nuts securing the pipe in place as well as the hose clip..

The Turbo blows much more pressure when in actuall driving motion, over simply reving the engine... so a split in a pipe still may not show at all while stationary...

Bear in mind the Turbo puts in a MAX 1 bar of pressure when driving... which is the whoosing, it can only be a split pipe.. I know the pipe from the air filter down to the turbo in is a more solid plastic pipe, also is the intermediate pipe from the turbo out to the intercooler, its only the intercooler pipes that are of a softer material...

SOLVED

after replacing all the rubber pipework its fine (£210)

with the pipes off i found the culprit, a 10mm slit by the intake manifold that doesnt show unless it's bent in a particular way (so under pressure it would leak).

at least all the pipes are good now

Strange the talcum powder did not initially show it up..

Did you take any pictures of the offending pipe?

ah its because i only put talk on teh joins on the whole pipe lengths as i figured it was more likely to be on a join, how wrong was i. i've still got the old pipes, i'll slap some pics up
