Saxo 'Nouvelle Frontiers' 1.0Ltr (Newbie)

Hello, just registered on this forum to help with my daughters little Saxo.

She has a 1.0Ltr "Nouvelle Frontiers" model. LHD & purchased over here in France.

She arrived home from work on Friday night & her gear lever just flopped uselessly to one side

Luckily it must have 'gone' just as she pulled in from a 40Km drive from work to home.

I had a look on Sat & found that a pin (cotter?) had gone awol within the gear linkage mechanism. I put a temp' pin in & it went forwards in reverse

So fitted a larger circumference temp' pin & all worked. Tried to get a replacement pin locally, but no joy. So ended up fitting a bolt with two nuts backed up to each other to prevent them undoing. She made it to work today so, phew!

Going to a place this afto' to order a new pin hopefully. Anyone else here suffered similar?

This is the first snag we've had with the car, which does an 80Km round trip daily. It's a 98' model that had 60,000Kms on purchase in 04. Now
has about 120,000Kms, so we're not complaining.

Me? Afraid I'm a Volvo nut & spend a lot of time on the RWDVolvo site & Volvo Owners Club.

I drive an 89' 240 Est with nearly 190K miles & a 91' 480 Turbo auto with 145K miles. The latter is due to be replaced this year as I'm fed up of driving with a wet bum!

So, hi I'm back again

The little Saxo is still flying along, now has 220,000 kms, so pushing 137,000 miles.

Daughter popped by today to show me a lot of oil leaks on the engine. Rocker cover gasket mainly. Thinking Positive Crankcase Ventilation blocked? Not overly sure which pipes to look at though.

Other things due are Cambelt. I've done a Volvo 480, 240 & 850 so far, never touched a Citroen (nearly went for it last time, but wimped out

).

Seriously thinking about getting a 'Paynes' manual & going for it!

Any pointers would be welcome

Haven't done a belt on the petrol engine, but it looks as easy as the diesel. Looking at it on Autodata the front cover is in three parts. Access is from under the bonnet and under the wing with the wheel and liner removed. The crank pulley is held by three bolts. Timing is set up through one hole in the cam shaft (maybe an 8mm bolt) and also through a hole in the flywheel cover - down the side of the engine - that will probably be a 6mm rod.

There's no auto tensioner so tension needs to be 45 SEEM units measured between cam and crank pulley. While the belt is off, it probably worth changing the water pump.

Thanks John. Water pump was done at last change. is it needed at every?

I've no idea about SEEM units.... can you explain further please?

Good to see your Saxo still going well at 137K miles.

You will have to do something about those Volvos though, you can't live in France and drive a Volvo

Im joking of course, im sure there great!

When, if they ever 'stop' maybe I'll think about a change. Not easy to find a garage, other than a mainstealer that really knows them. Especially old ones! Still gives me a good excuse to get me hands dirty! Loving it too.

Are there any 'how to' article type threads on here BTW?

If your water pump was done last time, I would say give it a miss this time. See how the pulley feels when the belt is off.

SEEM units is the measurement scale used by Citroen for tensioning the belt. The gauge I use is a Burroughs and that measures in Newtons. Fortunately Autodata publish a comparison chart to convert one to the other. If you don't have a tensioning gauge use the finger and thumb 45* twist on the long belt run.

Thanks! Glad to learn that the 45 'degree' twist is universal!

Next thing I need to know is about setting the timing marks. My 805 has positions clearly marked. 480 had a locking position done with a drill bit. once it was 'locked' the job 'was a gooden'. Still span it by hand with the plugs out mind, to be sure.

Whats the 'rule' on the little engined Saxo's?

The timing will be correct if you get the bolt screwed into the cam pulley and a 6mm rod into the flywheel. Timing hole for the cam pulley is at about 2 o'clock.

Okay, my daughter popped into a local garage on Monday just to ask about cambelt change & to enquire about the oil leaks. On the cambelt subject, the mechanic was, like here of the opinion that if the w/pump was done last time leave it this time.

The oil leak around the throttle body area (think that's where it is) is common with the mileage & little to be concerned about. For the other leak further down the engine, she is going back in for an estimate tomorrow a the mec' who does cars was off on Monday. the bloke she saw was the HGV repairer.

I'm kinda liking this garage. It's a new one & I've popped in once wit my Volvo 240 just to 'sound them out'. The two mec's 'down tooled' and literally ran out to get my bonnet up to have good squizz

We'll see what sort of price they come up with tomo' & make a decision as to pay or DIY then
