Please can someone help me to identify this leak!

Unread post by bbuk »

Hi,

I'm really hoping someone can help me identify, and possibly resolve this leak!

I've been smelling diesel in the car for a few days now, and had a look under the bonnet today to see if I could identify where it's coming from.

I've uploaded a picture to here:

It seems to be coming from the bottom of the green part, where it meets the bronze. I'm not very technical, as you can tell.

I was wondering whether it was a fuel injector.

If anyone could help me identify this, as it's dripping quite bad and concerned for safety and my drop in fuel economy! If it's a simple fix I'd appreciate any advice anyone can give me!

Thanks,

Andy

That's the stop solenoid, if the leak is coming out of there. Mine failed like that last year (it almost was coming out of the thread on the top)

They can leak like that, its easy to change and they are not too expensive. If you are changing it yourself, clean the area around it as it is essential not a spec of dirt gets inside when you remove it.

When you remove it (if you do it yourself) theres a tiny coil spring and plunger inside it, these will probably come out with it though.

Agree with spider, i had this as well, was seeping out between the green plastic and the body,(of the stop solenoid).

Think a new one was only about 12 quid at the local motor factors/shop.
Simple fix :)

Ah that's brilliant, thanks for the responses!

I've had a look in the Haynes manual too on how to replace it, and it looks quite straight forward.

The problem I'm having is that I can't find a replacement part anywhere!

I don't live near any brokers yards, and the websites online have all different model numbers.

As you can tell, I'm not very technically minded. I'm not 100% sure whether I have a Bosch or a Lucas fuel pump, and even when I've identified that, I'm not sure what part number I need to replace the solenoid. Would you have any idea?

Thanks again!

I'd need a bigger picture to be sure, but I am about 90% sure that is a Lucas pump from what I can see of it.

Do not get a secondhand one, they don't do very well. They are not that expensive new (avoid main dealer) go to Diesel specialist / Lucas etc.

If you have a look at yell.com or your local Thomson Local etc, look for a diesel specialist or decent motor factors (rather than a 'car spares' shop)

I know I mentioned it before but its worth it again: When changing, before undoing anything clean around the area completely and make sure its completely spotless no dirt must enter the hole when you remove it.

Okay, no worries.

I tried Lucas but they said they don't sell them, and I'd have to go through another company, which was a bit pants.

I'll possibly contact one of my local garages and see if they can order it in for me.

I'll be sure to be careful not to let any dirt in.

Thanks again for all your help!

You're welcome.

I am very very surprised Lucas say they did not sell them :o , that's where I got mine.

Having said that your local decent garage will be able to get one and if you want fit it for you if needed. It does not take long to do at all.

I was a bit shocked too. I got an email back referring me to a company called Delphi Diesel, but couldn't find any website for them either.

I'm hoping that the garage won't need anymore information. If they do, is there any danger in me removing the old solenoid so that I could take it in to show them? And when I remove it, so I have to disconnect anything in terms of fuel. Just had horrible visions of me removing it and diesel shooting out everywhere!

Delphi Diesel

Not sure if it is the same company but a girl I met in Belgium worked for Delphi - that was a subsidiary of GM.

No, although you will lose a bit of fuel when you remove it (possibly an egg-cup full or so) , it will not continually 'pour' out or anything.

Clean around it first! and then have a rag around the area to catch any fuel.

You may want to put something near the opening so nothing falls in if you are leaving it open for a while.

I don't have one to hand to take a picture, but basically its the unit itself and a spring and plunger and an o-ring.

It looks a bit like this (I just found this pic via Google, its not exactly right for yours) but the design and picture is:

Image

You can see on the black end the plunger (the black part itself, made of rubber) the spring is inside that. Then on the thread the o-ring (a new one will come with this, and the old one will come out usually with this attached)

Still strange as if you do have a Lucas pump, its a Lucas part anyway...

Whereabouts are you - maybe someone here will know of a diesel specialist local to you who can help.

Tyne Electrodiesel are one close to me.

Diesel Bob might be worth a look.

I was thinking the same thing myself. No motor factors etc.You live on an island or something? :P

And..what make/model/year of car is it?

The stop solenoid in your picture looks just like mine that failed.
Old N reg,i think, pug 306 1.9D,none turbo.
Here it is, in it's replacements packaging, (why the heck i kept it i've no idea!) PDSS01:

Have you tried 'the bay'? According to my replacement here's one, albeit dearer than a motor factors/car spares shop:

PDSS01:
Diesel Stop Solenoid - CAV

Some go for under a fiver:
Puegeot Stop Solenoid

Do a quick search, just make sure you get the correct one. Simple job to fit, unless your local garage aint greedy

I live in Saffron Walden, it's a small town in Essex. I'm hoping with the help of some of the guys above I should be able to find a place that sells them, or possibly one on eBay.

The packaging is a great help, and it looks like the exact part. Now I have the part number that should really help, thanks ever so much!

Well, I have finally managed to get hold of the replacement part, but for the life of me I can't remove the old one! Spanners just won't fit, and I've tried sockets up to 22. Anyone have any idea of the exact size I need to remove/refit this, so that I can order the correct sized socket?

Thanks!
