Disconecting the odometer

Hi all, new member here so please bear with me, I hope to purchase an '01 C5 and have a strange question before doing so. Is it possible to disconect the odometer and still drive the car. I think I have read on here that the speed sensor sends info to the suspension and gearbox (auto), but what about the Odo?
Said it was a strange question.

I cant think of any way to do it apart from disconecting all the ABS sensors. I would imaging the car wouldnt run very good as the injection ECU needs road speed info to make calculations.

I'll ask the obvious question in return - why would you want to do that?
Apart from the dubious legality of doing so, as soon as you refitted the odometer, it would communicate with the ECU and display total milage, including that done while it was disconnected.

Funny you should say that, about the ECU I mean, laying in bed last night (i'm in NZ) I realised thats what would happen.
Let me put it another way, if the speed sensor is disconected or faulty, what will be the consequences, here in NZ the gestapo want $0.04c per Km tax on diesels, i'm just thinking the unthinkable.

I dont believe there is a seperate speed sensor, the road speed info is taken from the ABS wheel speed sensors then multiplexed to all the other units that require it. If You disconect the complete instrument panel the odometer reading is still being counted by the BSI & will write the correct reading into the instrument panel as soon as it is plugged back in.

Whew, sounds pretty hi-tech. I give up, there will be NO tinkering with odometers at this end, i'm very grateful to you guys for the takin the time to answer.
Deposit paid, '01 C5 2.0 Hdi liftback, I fly down to Christchurch and drive back to Tauranga on the 29th May, can't wait.

It depends on how often they check as there are tools that will allow the milage to be clocked, ie for speedo replacements and so forth but i wouldn't condone this. Maybe run on Biodiesel to negate the tax?

Fly to Australia with it, as a million New Zealanders already have,

no odometer problems there.

I'm right into the Bio-Diesel I run 2 vans on the stuff, filtering waste vegie oil - 50/50, so should be sweet on the C5? Guess that'l be my main saving, I'd love Australia i'm sure, perhaps I'll put up with NZ till house prices climb again.

I don’t know about the C5’s HDI diesel pump, but we do have people in the know.

Steer clear of anything other than properly refined biodiesl on a C5, filtered WVO will cost you dear.
