Think I paid about £115 for pads and discs last summer. Don't foroget that when you inevitably find out that it needs new handbrake cables at the same time, the OS one is different because of the ML5 gearbox..... On the other hand, the brakes seem to last well on these - just been changing over the winter wheels on mine, and the front pads are not showing much sign of wear even though they've been on for 14k already. Suspect they will get nearer 40k before they need replacing. I used to go through front pads on a 1.9TD every 25k or so.

Thats odd because my 1998 1,9TD xantia estate has the large vented disks £45 a set ish.DickieG wrote:No they aren't, HDi 110 front disc's are usually the largest ones as fitted to V6's.
i think this comes down to what might be available on the production line at any one time, unless the SX just hass them fitted anyway.
cheers Nigel.

Disc & Pad data HERE together with step by step instructions for changing front ones (at 98,000 miles I still haven't yet had to even change the rear pads let alone discs or refit the calipers).

Ehemm No on my 1998 S2 xantia estate I have Bosch calipers and 288mm vented discs, I checked because I had to replace them when I bought the car. this produced some confusion because the incorrect calipers are fitted to my car apparently there are three different size discs on xantias two of which are vented, they also vary between petrol and diesel models.handyman wrote:Nigel, your discs are 283mm, as the calipers are ATE Bendix. The later HDi, the V6 and the last of the Activas had 288mm vented discs, with Bosch calipers. A whole different set-up.![]()
Anybody got any of these later calipers and hubs spare? PM, please.

and two different make calipers one being bosch and the other being bendix. there are also three different size brake pads for each size disc/ each make of caliper. I am However not complainning the brakes are brilliant. I always make a point of installing new front pads every year no matter how warn they are, it keeps the discs in good condition to.
regards Nigel.

Hi Addo, according to the factory listings, you can upgrade from the smaller solid discs to the 283mm vented disc and just change the caliper carrier, providing you keep the ATE Bendix caliper. This gives any Xantia a better set of brakes, as you can use the largest set of Bendix pads, made for the Activa. I posted this information a good while back.
The Bosch system, which uses the 288mm vented disc, uses a different hub, carrier, caliper, disc and handbrake cables. The pads are considerably larger than the largest Bendix pads, so braking performance is increased. Set up properly and you should be able to stand the car on its nose.
I have already done a number of these upgrades, both on my cars and for others, its really just a matter of sourcing all the right parts from a donor car.
Looks like somebody has already done the mod to Nigels estate car.
I wonder who?

This is why I like my brakes so much as you say set properly you can almost stand the car on its nose it'll stop on a penny as they say.
even with the lightest of presure on the pedal in fact I wouldnt even say the word pressure was right more resting my foot on the pedal.
I reckon someone bought the wrong discs at one point probably a garage, the service manual shows it was unfortunately serviced by some local cowboys that most people wouldnt want anywhere near their pride and joy. and they were miss sold the upgrade kit to fit them also.
looks like they were fitted by mistake by a moron who didnt really know what he was up to. or he couldnt get hold of the 283mm discs. the other possibility is that only 288mm dvented dics were available on the production line at that particular time and the car was factory fitted with them as standard, I was surprised to find that my friends 1.8 petrol estate had non-vented discs that are considerably smaller than anything I have seen on other xantia models. he even has smaller brake pads.
my dads front discs on his Mk1 xantia VSX has vented 283mm discs.
regards Nigel.
