On buying SVO from Tesco

BONANZA!

Now, when I was que-ing with this haul, a member of the shop Gestapo came up to me and asked if I had 'ordered' it. I said no, and she said I should have done if it was over ten bottles, 'to be fair to everyone else'.

It was a polite enough conversation, but I couldn't help thinking of the double standards Tesco apparently apply given their monopoly on the high street! From which I have just benefitted!

Ah, that's a secret blend of Hardy's Australian shiraz, keeps me lubricated!

That was £4.69, and again so much cheaper than COOP.

Hi Tim,

That's an interesting report as I was told it's against shop (Tesco) policy to reserve any item. Yes you can order online but even then, it's still not reserved for you, they just pick it when they're ready to load the van.

I agree with you describing them as Gestapo, that was the very attitude I got from a manager I had a heated debate with. They feel they should be able to control what we want to buy. Sure, they can control what they stock but where do they get off telling us how much we can have?

Quite. I could have gone in and out of the shop 48 times all morning, but in whose interests would that have been?

Answer = Tesco.

That is the idea of shops, isn't it? To sell things?

Asda sometines do this and I was behind someone with a shopping trolley full of Coke, nothing else. They were selling it for £1 for a 2L bottle, BOGOF.

A supervisor came over and said that they would let it go this time but there was a limit of 5 (10) bottles per customer.
When they had gone, the checkout operator told me that the person buying the Coke was the owner of a corner shop an well known for taking advantage of such offers and then selling the stuff for four times the price in his shop.

In fairness there should have been a clear notice to say that there was a limit per customer.
Failing that I don't think they can object BUT it is law that they can refuse to sell anything to anyone without stating why.

We're obviously touching the 'rightfulness' or otherwise of buying things.

Let's say no veg oil or Coke was on offer and you went in a stocked your trolley to the gunnels. Would Tesco be so keen to intervene?

I say no, they wouldn't.

Just because one person was blatantly taking advantage of the offer of BOGOF cannot mean, surely, morally if not legally, that the rest of us should not also buy large amounts.

I mean, shops exist to sell stuff, don't they? Since when did they care about to whom and for why?

I'm not looking for confrontation, here, just stating my viewpoint.

At no point, BTW, do I feel bad about buying 130l of SVO.

I agree absolutely, if they have items offered for sale, then anyone should be able to buy them in the quantities that they require.

If the shelves are empty when others come along then tough, they should have been there earlier.

If there is some kind of limit to the amount of items per customer then it should be clearly stated on or near the items.

I can honestly say I've cleared out about half a shelf out a supermarket but I've never purchased that much!
Quite a chuckle!

When I first had a trolley full, probably around 40 litres, the rather attractive checkout girl asked why on earth I was buying so much, for some reason I said it was for a barbecue...
