Seatbelt light is staying on [ Resolved ]

Post by HDI Dave »

Hi all,

as title, the seatbelt dash light started staying on intermitantly a couple of weeks ago, then it would go off.
Now it's illuminating permanently. Is this a common problem and anyone got any idea of a cause?
I'm not too fussed realy, but was wondering if it would fail the upcoming Mot, and don't the seatbelt assembly's contain a small explosive charge or something,as they go off in a crash? Wouldn't want that happening!

Cheers for any info, Dave.

Have a check of the connectors under the seats dave, and check they're nicely home. This is the usual cause...

There's no worries about the pretensioners going off acctdentially at all...

I believe, and don't take this as gospel, that a duff airbag/seatbelt warning light will only bring up an advisory on the MOT...

Hmmm! Yam RD350. That brings back some happy memories....

Yes, I ve also read that Air Bag lights are NOT part of MOT...

The likely cause is as Jim says the connectors under the seat, being a 1999 it will have side air bags in the seat bolsters, so there will be 3 connectors under the seat, pull them out and push them back in, with ignition off, then see were you go from there..

Its amazing how little seat movement can trigger a dodgy connection and set the light off..

Crap really!

Ahh,that could be it! I drive in a normal position, but the wife rives the seat fully forward so the steering wheel's touching her belly! So the seat is constantly back and forth.

Are there connectors under the rear seats also,or is it just the front two?

Cheers guys, I'll have a look later and report back :)

oh Jim, aye, i'm hoping to restore my old RD,been languashing in the shed for over a decade (kids etc  ). I had a cracking GSXR 750, but had to get rid due to permanent hand injuries, so maybe i can adapt it and tootle around on it

The driver's seat belt warning light, is it? From memory a black connector - easy to follow it through to the buckle as it runs up the stalk - unlike the pretensioners, which just go to the explosive cylinders.

It stays on when the contacts are bridged - disconnect the plug and it will go out. I had to lightly dunk the buckle up and down in water to un-gum it (previous life included spilled drinks that were upsetting the internal contacts). Once dry it was fine.

No air bags in the rear at all, so no need for pre tensioners..

The wires are under the seat at the front of the base.... put the drivers seat on High position, makes it a little easyer to see them..

Waahay, 1 minute fix :D

Indeed it was the underseat connector. There's a green one to the left, white to the right, and a brown one in the middle. I only tried the brown one, quick wiggle and it's sorted.

Cheers guys :)

Dave.
