The main problem is not the tread, but the sidewalls. Under hard cornering, the tyre tucks under the alloy. When my road tyres get down to the markers (Michelin PE2), I burn them off at the track. It's the side walls and shoulders that dissappear very quickly, and that's with a relatively low profile tyre with strengthened sidewalls. I also pop in an extra few PSI to stiffen them up a bit. I dread to think what will happen to a normal tyre with a full day at the track!
