Hopefully a simple question / answer.
I've succesfully run my citroen xsara 1.9td on 100% commercially produced biofuel (100%) is there any reason why I shouldn't do the same with my Pug 406 est 1.9td?
I've done a load of searches, most come up with people talking about veg oil, svo, wvo, and making your own. I'm not wanting to go that far just happy to use local commercially made stuff.
I know they have different pumps but from what I've read the bosch pump on my pug should be better than the lucas one on my citroen or have I got that the wrong way round??

Fortunatly it is a simple answer.

Assuming it is Biodiesel, which is processed vegetable oil, then it's supposed to be safe to use in almost all diesels. That's what the processed-ness is supposed to acheive, diesel-like viscosity, unlike vegetable oils normal gloopyness.

I'm unsure if biodiesel works in direct injection diesels as I know the issue with vegetable oil + direct injection is that vegetable oil burns slower than normal diesel, and I'm not sure that biodiesel affects the burning speed.

However none of this direct injection talk is relevant in your 1.9TD engines - they're both indirect injection, and both happy as larry to run on biodiesel. Only bosch pumped ones are happy to run on vegetable oil but they all work on biodiesel.

If you've got a bosch fuel pump (Xantia 1.9TD's did, not sure if there was a mix of bosch and lucas on pugs) then you could just use vegetable oil.

Maybe later, just got the car need to check it all out first.

Biodiesel is 91p which is a good saving to start with and my xsara runs noticibly better on the stuff.

In my opinion obviously, I don't have any figures to prove it.
We haven't used it for a while, it's the wifes car and she doesn't like the smell!!
When we used it the car seemed smoother, more responsive and slightly better on mpg but not a lot in it.
It's a cracking engine in her car though more like a turbo petrol. Wish the engine in my pug was half as good as hers. :(

Hi,

I've got an N reg Peugeot 406 1.9TD.

Where do I get the biodiesel from, and how much difference will it make compared to normal diesel which is nowadays at around 122.9 per litre?

Many people brew it themselves. Have a look at VegeableOilDiesel.co.uk. The have a great forum there and all the help you could ever need.

Could be great fun but the handling of methanol (deadly toxic) and caustic soda (AKA "Lye", NaOH) which is highly corrosive to EVERYTHING including people, gives me the screaming heebie-jeebies.

Cold be great if you enjoyed a chemistry set as a kid...

Have a look on here, http://www.biodieselfillingstations.co.uk/, I don't make it my self just turn up at the local station and pump it in.
£1.21 at the filling station today, £0.95 at the bio diesel place.
Allegedly the local taxis collect it in containers for £0.85 a litre, its sold as bio heating oil, comes out of the same pump but as its not going directly into a vehicle the chap doesn't have to charge the duty.

I've run a C5 HDi and an A Class on bio with no problems, both are common rail diesels. My local Morrisons used to stock it but not any longer.

I've also used bio in a 2.5TD XM, 2.1TD XM and 405TD.

I seemed to get one bad batch from a waste veg to bio recyclers that gunked up the fuel filter in the 2.5, it looked and smelt as if it was infected, apart from that no trouble at all.

Yes a 406 1.9td will run on bio.
All 406 1.9td's have a Bosch pump and will run on veg or bio,
You will need to replace the fuel filter after a while (two or three tank fulls) as bio/veg will loosen up all the crap in the tank and block the filter.
You will also notice the differance when it comes to the MOT as the amount of smoke will be less.

Does anyone know if using bio diesel would affect claiming mileage tax relief? I'm currently getting 40p per mile relief and covering 25 - 30k miles business mileage so it's certainly worth consideration.

I claim my mileage it I go anywhere for work, and my car hasn't seen forcort fuel since I got it,
I did a 215 mile trip and got 43p per mile and fuel only cost me 7ppl :yes:
Unless you have to show recites how will they know.

Hasn't Citroen/Peugeot said that only up to 30% biodiesel should be used in HDIs.
