2003 model Berlingo - horn always on! Any advice?

Unread post by classixuk »

Hi Everyone,

I have a 2003 model Berlingo 1.9D.

On the last MOT it failed due to "movement on the steering wheel". The garage said it was probably just a loose steering wheel nut, so I took off the central airbag and sure enough they were correct. I've tightened the nut, but when I put the airbag back onto the steering wheel and reconnect the battery, the horn sounds continuously.

I've checked and I have snagged no wires or anything like that.

Does anyone have any idea what I've done wrong or how to fix it?

Many thanks

it works by earthing the red wire that connects to the steering wheel switch on the airbag. Either the wire must be shorted, it's connected to the wrong terminal or the switch contacts have stuck closed.

Hi Wheeler,

Thanks for your reply!

I've had a little look but can't see that the wire is shorted etc. I even disconnected the entire airbag section and removed it, placed the keys in the ignition and the horn sounded continously.

My dad said it might be a stuck relay?

Any further ideas would be greatfully appreciated.

Cheers,

Hopefully not as the relay is an itegral part of the (expensive) under bonnet fuse box.

Did you remove the steering wheel or just tighten the nut ?
Next steps to try- Remove the little carpet trim under the steering column & check for wires chaffing on the steering column shaft where it rotates. If all ok remove the airbag completely and the little black plug that sits in the steering wheel housing & see if it still does it. If still doing it switch the ignition off for a few minutes Then unplug the grey connector on the com2000 (indicator & wiper stalk assembly) switch the ignition on & see if it still does it & report back.
P.S. when you disconnect the grey plug the lights & wipers will start to operate by themselfs, Dont worry about this it's completely normal, its a kind of back up mode.
