Unread post by glynn »

Just a quick one. Got a remote key for car but no spare. Am i able to have a spare cut from the original key i have or does it have to be another key purchased from peugeot and programmed to my vehicle in order that it works????

You can get a cheapish key cut from your original but it depends what your original key will do. If it locks deadlocks, the cut key won't do that. If it unlocks the car with a button, the cut key won't do that. It will unlock the car but maybe will start an alarm and as your original key has a chip in it, the cut key won't start the engine.

If you call someone like:-
http://www.theautolocksmith.co.uk/Peugeot-car-keys.html
they can cut you a key that will manually open the car and also start the engine. But of course the price is considerably higher than the high street keycutter.

There's a few things to consider here, well two actually.

What model and what year ?

1. There's the immobilizer chip in the key that needs a Pug Diag or possibly Lexia to 'code' in.

2. The remote locking on the car, later ones may again need to be programmed in, earlier ones can be done manually by either using the fob at the receiver or in the barrel (depending on model and year) , typically the infra-red remotes can be programmed at home (406 / 306, NOT 106 / 405) , radio ones (no led on the blade end, look closely) need a diag to program.

I bought a plip on ebay for my C5 for a tenner. I was told a Citroen dealer could reprogramme it to my car. Apparently they couldn't. I got http://www.theautolocksmith.co.uk to look at it. Eventually by changing the chip, he got it to manually open the car and start the engine. He wasn't able to get the central locking working on the plip.

Yes, it seems the 'newer' they are the more difficult it is :? :(

From memory, Peugeot changed from 'infra-red' remotes to 'rf' about 1999 or so although there's going to be a year or so 'each way' as it were due to model changes and stock etc. Can't say on a year really what it will have, need to see existing key.
