I just had my ZX 1.9TD tuned today!

I just had my Citroen ZX tuned by Dervdoctor Gavin today. It has made a massive difference in torque and acceleration! I think it is well worth the £120 that it cost me. Has anyone else had this type of manual tuning done? If so, are there any side effects other thatn some slight smoke at some points. The BHP has increased from 92 to around 118bhp. I thought I'd just share the good news with you people. I just discovered this forum and loved it the moment I set eyes on it!

So whats he done to achieve this increase then.
If you as you say have 'some slight smoke at some points', is that going to pass the MOT when its due and how much fuel are you going to use.

He has played around with the injector pump, turbo (I think) and increased the fuel flow. It does drink a little when it is pushed hard, but on the other hand, the torque has dramatically increased letting me change gears earlier. In the latter case, fuel consumption will decrease i was told. Overall, it has made quite a difference to what was a nippy car to begin with. Now it has become a bit more nippier!

Had mine tuned by Allard in early December. Only down side is the increased fuel consumption when driven very hard.
As for the additional smoke, this only occurs when the car labours, so by using the gearbox well you should not have a problem.
Had mine MOT'd at the end of January. Passed the smoke emission test without a problem.

I had my Xantia 1.9 TurboD tuned by Allard. It goes well and doesn't smoke any more than before. fuel consumption seems around the same or slightly (1mpg or so) better.
Allard haven't got a rolling road, so I'm not absolutely sure what Bhp I get now. Did you have yours tested on a rolling road to know that you had 92 to start with and now have 118 ?

Kev, Neither does Gavin have a rolling road, but he is to move to new premises soon where he will have it. I have no real idea exactly what bhp it is now, but was assured by Gavin that it had increased to at least 22BHP more. - I can believe it. When I drive it, I can actually notice a large difference and have had to alter my driving style slightly to accommodate the indrease in power. I now have to change gears fairly early.

I think this is an important question... will tuning the car invalidate your insurance if you don't declare that it has been 'tuned'?

Yes the insurance WILL NOT be valid if they find out that you have had it modified. How will they find out if you don't tell them???? There is absolutely NO WAY anyone cn tell that it has been modified.

What constitutes tuning? Making the engine run as well as it was originally designed to run? (i.e. "blueprinting" isn't tuning - its just making sure all the tolerances in the original design work in your favour). Is turning the rear view mirrors in and taping over the door cracks tuning? it makes the car go faster (even if only slightly). Is removing all unnecessary weight (spare tyre, tools, carpets, rear seat, you name it . . . tuning?

Alan Allard charged £100 + VAT to tune my ZX.
With regard to invalidating your insurance, a tuned car is just that. Insurers only want to know if the vehicle has been modified by removing OEM bits and adding parts that will boost performance in some way. By tuning to enhance performance you do not invalidate your insurance.
