Which van to go for ???

Unread post by HDI »

OK , this is a how long is a piece of string question !!

The need has arisen for me to buy a van and it's an area where my knowledge and experience is limited.
Depending on what is available for my budget of around £2k , which I know is restricted but thats how it is , it will be the largest of the small vans , like the Berlingo , Doblo etc , to the smaller end of the panel vans like the Peugeot boxer etc , and it will be diesel.

Now , the question is , which vans have the best rep for reliability , engine and transmission wise ? There is a distinct possibility that it will have a common rail diesel and I don't want a van with an engine that is known for endless problems and being expensive to repair !

Any advice and info will be appreciated.

Well probably a 1.9D Berlingo will be your best bet. Should easily get a good one for your budget. HDi will be more economical, one of the better modern diesels imo, but more expensive to buy than a 1.9D.

Dont know much about the Doblo, its odd looking and its a fiat, which arnt known to be well built. Saying that ive been in the car version with the turbo diesel engine and it was fine. I prefer the Berlingo though.

Id go for the Berlingo, they are reliable, reasonably spacious for a smaller van, easy to source and cheap to run. Though it depends what you need to carry in it. If your needing something a bit bigger then the Dispatch isnt a bad van, though i did find it very noisey.

Or there is the Vauxhall Combo, maybe its not big enough but its actually quite big inside. Cheap to buy too.

Yup i would go with the Berlingo as well. I had a Berlingo to do courier work for a few years and It never missed a heartbeat and had plenty loading space. Ant witht the Berlingo that aint that much in it to go wrong to be honest. :D
