Yes and no..

If you get an auto that works correctly with good smooth gearchanges then KEEP on top of Gearbox fluid changes!!!

Use DEX 2 only, change it every 20k or so, maybee less and you should see a good service from it!!

Sorry Andrew, i had missed that one, could be cheap, but i agree with some of the comments about it, " no pics and not a particulaly good write up to sell it make you wonder, if it only needs a back box for an MOT, then why not stick one on it and give it half a chance of making a bit of money, i know i would,
keep my eye on it though.

Not the old hydro-mechanical 4HP18 on the XM range Nigel, providing you do as Paul says with regard to fluid and filter changes. Pretty much bomb-proof really.

Autobox trouble only really started to be an issue with the introduction of the electronic "sealed for life" autoboxes fitted to the PR V6 (very late V6 XMs only) and series 2 Xantias and others fitted with the Siemens AL4. They have a habit of dying at around 120-140K

I stress I only have (albeit considerable) experience of the PR V6 autobox (the 4HP20) and I've never been inside any other.

Deanxm is the 4HP18 specialist around here :D He's had 'em in bits and know their foibles...

Unfortunally Jim, the HP 18 was a problem for the XM for some reason or another...

Which is why we lost a lot of cars in the first place.. Im uncertain if its because Citroen Never specified a Fluid service on the auto box so people never bothered.. and the rest is hostory..

Ahh :!: Never knew that Paul  So they repeated that error again on the 4HP20 then

A case of plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose then

GET one between K 1993 to 1994 M, these seem the best and have little to no issues with the suspension ECU's!

Let's face it, when any Citroen get's to the second, third (and so on) owner
most people's prejudices that's it's a worthless POS means the niceties of
gearbox oil changes etc are completely ignored. Now if the car was badged
with 4 rings, a star or a propeller no service job would be too expensive or
bother on the VISA card.

So. Guess what happened to all the V6 Xm's?
(Clue - 95% are powered through and autobox) :?

And staying with prejudices most non believers will just write them off as
being too big, complicated and thirsty too.

The remaining auto Xm's have either had TLC from the start and are probably
staying with the owner that presently has the car or by some sheer fluke are
managing to still provide forward motion - that is, right up until you buy it?

It may pay to drive one first - you may hate the handbrake and find
(like a fella on club-xm) that you don't even fit in the car! Sunroofs again...

I must have gone wrong somewhere, but im sure i read Andrew saying the best Xm is an automatic!

Andrew has it right (usually!), in my opinion a manual is the way to go with an Xm, ive finally decided. The xms auto box is nice, better than some automatics in my opinion. Regular oil changes are a must. Though they can fail and it gets costly if it does. A manual is a more reliable bet, so long as you look after the clutch it will treat you well. We have had our white auto Xm for 8 years now, granted its only done 22K miles in that time but its still performing fine at 86K miles.

We have a VW automatic which is failing. Ive just driven it for 70 miles this evening, i dont like this box at the best of times but it almost undrivable now. This one is not going into lock up sometimes and when lifting off to slow down it cuts out of drive and free wheels. Nightmare. Its soon to go in for repairs, quoted a minimum of £1400 upards. Wouldnt get that with a manual! Not that Xms give these problems, but they can play up in other ways.

There are a good few Xms for sale on ebay at the moment, im surprised. The grey one your thinking about looks very tasty. Not sure if you would consider an estate, but this looks good:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1998-CITROEN-XM-V ... 3caa4fd8d6

Despite its S1 nose cone its a tidy looking car from the picutres, good mileage for a 2.1 and auto too. Its got air con. Needs a litte work but will make a nice car.

Id be tempted to get a manual, just so your wife cant put her mark on it!

No but seriously, manual or automatic, both have their merits. We have one of each and i enjoy driving both. Depends what you prefer to drive, there are many automatic Xms around (probably more than manuals?) and i asume all which are advertised still drive. At one point you had to specify a manual box in an Xm, as an auto was standard. Towards the end of production i think.

There is certainly a good selection at the moment.

Our white one might be available soon as i say, cant decide at the moment as i do really like the car, but it gets the least use. Ill let you know.

As far as headroom goes, im pretty sure there is more room in the estate. Im quite tall and dont have a problem in the estate, though the roof is closer in the hatchback. Both cars have a sunroof.

Not a sight you'll see every day or likely to see much of in the future either...
How can anyone considering an Xm resist a silver V6 SEi.
