Hi Jim
The Perkins 4/108 engines I used for conversions had a CAV/lucas pump and were almost indestructable by modern standards. I had a problem with uneven running and intermittent throttle sticking for a period of time until I found that my bulk diesel tank had a leak on the top and the contents were about 15% water!, the piston that controlled the fuel flow was rusting to its bore, but as soon as you gave it pure diesel it would free off again, with the occaisional application of something slightly abraisive to it.
The first Lucas pump I had on a 'modern' vehicle was my wifes BX, that also suffered water in the fuel and the front bearing went, I fitted a Bosch as a replacement and the difference in performance was astounding, could have been of course the the fueling was set higher, never had another problem with that one.
The Lucas pumps in the CX's never gave any trouble and my last one had done 262k
I have had a mechanical Bosch at nearly 300k and one at present that has done 250k, without problem, except for the failure of the cold start thermostat which seems to be pretty universal and in most cases makes little difference'

Hence my Bosch preference.. I Do not abuse them and use Veggie, I think thats were the problems come in.. As I said, my Xantia Bosch is now on 233k with no problems... useing SDF (Straight Diesel Fuel)

Cant say it bothers me what pump it has, but the Boch seems around the most reliable and offers better fuel economy? Also isnt there difference in performance depending on pump type?
Id never put vegie in the Xm though, it does so few miles anway it wouldnt be worth it.

Got it on Chris! I dont bother, I dont think its worth the risk of a rusty or gummed up pump.. Ive not got enough time for the messing with my own car!

iv'e got to sell the Magane first anyway, so patiance is a vertue,
Wev'e come to an agreement, it don't matter if it's a manual one as I'M NOT GUNNA LET HER DRIVE IT !!!!!!!.
Having bought the Xantia, in good condition, 1998, 1 owner , full history, 80000 miles, now it has a few scratches, picked up in supermarket car parks, and now a scrape on the front bumper

She should have gone to Specsavers

You don't want that one, Xm's need to be an automatic!!harryjoe wrote:Hi all.

Anyhow it's been a while since I've bought an Xm too...
I saw it as soon as it was listed and have asked about the state of
service items such as clutch and timing belt sphers etc. One of the
best colours/spec on a series 1 Xm and judging by the bidding on this:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1995-CITROEN-XM-V ... 0529098830
likely to realise a good price
The SEi is effectively the Xantia equivalent VSX spec in terms of bells and
whistles on a series 1 Xm.

Thanks Andy for that,
The link you put up is for a red one, the one i'm looking at is listed as grey, but looks dark green metalic, on ebay at £200 at mo, may be me crossing wires
Auto would be magic, but if i get a manual one , she can't drive it , she only has an auto licence,
Get my drift !!!
