I WANT AN XM !!!!!

Hi all, .

Now as my dear wife has taken control of my Xanita, after the death of the gearbox on her Megane the other day !

( and her being totaly agianst buying Citroen agian) . NO TASTE !

With the Megane in for open heart surgery on the gearbox, iv'e decided to sell that on when repaired, and transform it into an Xm for me

..

So as you are all in the know, as i only recently purchased the Xantia, I'm after some advice from you guys as to what would be the best model ? engine ? ( not a v6 pls ) although would be lovely

,but the catch is she also said she may like to drive that too,

, so as she only holds an auto licence, it's got to be auto ! do i go for a diesel or petrol ?? and what model, there seems to be a few

Any pointers in the right direction would be greatfully received..

Not perfect but worth considering. Just make sure the autobox fluid's been regularly changed!

I didnt think that XM's had ariels in the c pillar? perhaps im wrong?

The only thing that sticks out in my mind is his remaining lack of faith in its starting ability even though the glows and battery have been replaced.

Other than that it seems like a good cheap way into XM ownership.

If i bought an xm id look for one known to someone on here....

I have decided, I think Im going to get my V6 12v Auto done up and let her go, Ive got a nice 80k engine and box to go in, and shes on LPG gas too!

Got to get this black Turbo Auto LPG finished too!!

Congratulations on your choice to buy an Xm

The blue ebay 2.1TD is currently very cheap, and will no doubt give good economy. Probably around 35-40 depending on where/how you use it.

If economy is something your after, then a TCT petrol is probably not the best choice, these can be a little heavy on fuel, but perform well. I think most people get 28-30MPg on average from their Turbos? Then there is the 2.0 16v (in S2), these are very good engines, we have had three now. The 2.0 16v auto does around 30-35MPG on average, mostly closer to 35 and more if on a good run. Dont forget that this is a petrol and fuel is cheaper, always something to consider.

Though if you do a lot of miles a diesel would probably be better. A 2.1TD AUTOMATIC is possibly one of the most popular Xm versions, there seems to be always a few for sale at any one point, TCts are not hard to come by but the 2.0 16v seems the least common - going by what i see for sale.

Make sure the car you buy has had regular gearbox oil changes, its not unknown for them to fail and oil changes certainly prolong their life.

If you dont do a huge mileage, id possibly consider looking for a petrol, as diesels tend to be showing a fair few miles now and you might just get a petrol in better condition as a result. Though the diesels will do high mileages without little fuss and generally the Xm isnt a car which shows its miles.

If your wanting air con then your search will be harder, as this was only ever an option on anything but an exclusive, hence most dont have this.

Are you looking for an estate or a hatchback?

The best version in my opinion is the 2.1 manual but they are getting like hens teeth, the last three have been bought by club xm members.

V6's are wonderfull on LPG Of course, but not when thet start developing starter problems...

I connot complain, my ole girl did 40 odd K while I had her, and never gave me any grief in the suspension or electrics depeartment (EXCEPT ABS!!)

Having LPG made her nearly as good as DERV.. I loved it!

i think the XM is a very good looking car, appart from you just need very deep pockets if the strut tops go, at around 400 quid a side

Thanks soooo much guys,

, the megane should be back on the road end of next week, had to sorce a secondhand gearbox for it

The other one was totaly minced inside , so i was told, and cheaper to replace than rebuild !!!
So it should be back with us end of next week, so it will be all systems go on the XM front

..
Thanks for the links on ones forsale , i like the look of either of those on the classic site, lets hope they hang around a bit !!!
The one on ebay, not bad car either, with very little work to do.
I dont do a lot of motorway miles, they are very few and far betwwen in my part of the world, mainly town work, but would only use it when the wife's not useing the Xantia, i'm tempted just to buy a manual now , after it returned this morning with a white stipe on the bumper

, i didn't see the post !!!!!!, umm i think an XM would scare her

Xms are a fair bit bigger than Xantias, the front is harder to judge and the overhang at the front is much longer, giving it a larger arc when pulling into a parking bay.

Ive never had a problem but at first it takes some getting used to, hence why the majority of Xms suffer badly with bumper rash.

My mum wont drive the Xms, she finds them way too big and she cant judge the ends. She used to drive the auto but after finding something white (she never admitted as to what it was she hit) with the front bumper she hasnt driven one again. Luckily the white came off with a good few doses of bumper care! You do soon get used to them though, as you do any car, and they are narrower than C5s, but a bit longer.

An auto would be great for around town, i always like nipping around town in the auto, nice to get in an auto and be lazy for a change. I really cant decide what i like more in an Xm, auto or manual. A manual is good fun as you have 4 pedals (not a problem) but the auto suits the Xms nature well too.

I might know of a 2.0 16v auto which might be looking for new digs.
