What's that cable that comes across the camera? It goes into the brake caliper but I'm not sure what it is?

Whatever it is seems to be rediculously taught when the suspension is on service low, to the point where I'm surprised it's not snapped! Is this normal?!

Handbrake Cable Dom :D

Remember all Xantias handbrake on the front wheels...

Quite normal for them to be very tight I'm happy to say!!!

Right, I thought it might be having just this minute checked out how to adjust the handbrake lever for the MOT tomorrow (fingers crossed eh).

Why does it need to be so tight?? I can hear a twanging sort of sound when the suspension is lowering down to service low, I assume it's these cables but I can't be sure, does that sound likely Jim? It seems so tight the the point where I'd not like to put any lock on while its on service low, I know you shouldn't anyway but it seems odd to be unable to!

Check the cables are properly routed in their guide eyes Dom, right from the caliper to the middle of the car.

I suspect yours may also be partially seized. You'll see cracks in the outer sheath. These let moisture in and the cables then corrode internally and get tight.

That'll make 'em twang.

Note that one of the cables on an Activa is a special, shared with the V6, HDi and 2.1TD. In my fuzzy state, I cannot recall which now.

They are an easy job to change despite looking a bit of a devil.

OK Jim thanks for that, my outer sheaths are cracked showing the metal rings around the outside of the cable, if that makes sense.

The cables themselves don't seem seized however. The handbrake comes up fairly high though which is a bit of an MOT worry. Hopefully if anything it'll be an advisory and nothing else.

yep, should be fine as long as both wheels really do lock up solid on the handbrake and don't bind when released.

A good test of handbrake efficiency is that you are able to undo and retighten the wheel nuts against it...

The handbrake is certainly very powerful so I don't think handbrake strength will be an issue to be honest. And they don't bind once released. It's just how far up the handbrake comes that could be a problem in their eyes.

But then again I adjusted my 306 handbrake so well that it didn't bind at all when off, but less than 1 click was enough to have an effect, and by 3 clicks it was fully on. Which was an advisory for being too well adjusted :roll:
