Sources for PTFE?

Unread post by DHallworth »

Hi Guys,

Do any of you know of or have a source for PTFE?

I'm looking to try and fabricate a new activa ram bush for my Activa.

It's clunking away like mad at 52k miles.

David.

Probably the easiest thing to do is ask Jim for one of his bushes.

We've got a full size lathe, milling machine and all of the other bits and pieces in the workshop so I should be able to make a set.

I've also got a big diesel burning space heater so it's not to bad to stand there doing something.

All I need to do is get the current one off my Activa to measure and get some material to make them from.

My Activa is kept in storage and not used so that I can preserve it but I know it needs doing so I want to get them done.

David, sounds like a lovely workshop :D I just have a Myford ML7 and a little fan heater :(

I use moly filled Nylon66 to make the substitute bush and the sizes are:

Diameter: 23.9mm
Length: 23.5mm
Centre hole: 12mm (make it tight)

That will give a good tight fit in the ram eye and yoke.

The remains of the old bush will be very tight in the ram eye. use a couple of sockets and some stout studding to extract it in-situ.

My website (follow the link to Activa Rear ram Replacement) shows how to undertake a full rear ram replacement and some pictures will be valuable for seeing how to release the lower end of the ram and to be able to move it far enough forward to get at the bush. There is no need to release the top fixing.

Hi Jim,

Many thanks for that!

The facilities in the workshop are very handy.

We've got:

Arc/Tig/Mig and Oxy Acetylene welding gear,
Surface grinders
Pillar drill
50 ton hydraulic press that uses air to drive the hydraulic pump
Millng machine
Lathe
4 post ramp for the cars which is a god send!

And probably a few other bits I've forgotten.

I'll grab some pictures of it one day and let you have a look.
