Hi David, therein is the conundrum. Do you wait for a low mileage car with a known history and pay the premium for it or buy something a little more used, but spend the money saved putting it straight?

There is a world of difference between 5000-6000 Euros and £6-700, I know what I would do.

I wrote to the seller of the green one and got the following response:

The car has an LHM leak from the rear.
I'm unsure if the car would drive back to the UK, the leak is fast.
If you are going to try this I must emphasise that the car is sold without warranty.
I would recommend trailering the car back to the UK.

The problem is that the trailer we have weighs 900kg unladen so to tow a Xantia on it I can only really use my dad's Range Rover.

The V8 Diesel in it does at best an average of 20mpg when towing the trailer and the Xantia was 1190 miles each way.

So a round trip of 2360 miles would need roughly 118 gallons of Diesel, probably more as the econonmy when towing a loaded trailer is less. At £5 per gallon that equates to £590.

Taking a 16 foot trailer on the ferry both ways is extorsionate too.

By the time I've factored everything in I wasn't going to have any change from £2k for a non running Xantia Activa.

It suddenly then starts to become an expensive non running Xantia, especially when you don't know whats leaking at the back. If it's the Activa ram you're talking an extra £400 on top of that again and the costs of registering it in the UK, plating it, insuring an imported car etc and you could easily see £3k.

David.

Similar costs to that I experienced fetching my Dee. £600 in fuel, £850 in boat fares for car and trailer. For a car I paid £275 to buy! :?
