NOISEY AT HIGH SPEED

Unread post by miggy24 »

Right well when im going along at 70-80 mph it gets really noisey in the car but the noise is coming from the air vents and i think it maybe from the turbo as it only happens when you hit the turbo. Is this right for the car or is the turbo on its way out

What sort of noise?

Can you describe it a bit better?

Has the performance dropped off, IE: no go in her, trouble going uphill??

Likely to be one of the intercooler pipes has popped off, you get a VERY loud WHOOOOSSSSSSSSSSSING noise when one is off and the turbo is blowing

I Assume this car in question is a Xantia???

Check around the engine bay, joins are at: Each end of the radiator (jntercooler is infront of rad) Joins halfway up each of those pipes, join ON the manifold, and a join on the outlet of the turbo..

IF shes an earlyer car, 1994 to 1996 the turbo outlet pipe is joined to the turbo by a piece of hose in an L shape with two hose clips, these can let the air pipe go, but later cars have the Turbo outlet bolted DIRECTLY onto the turbo eliminating that as a pop off area..

Umm. Odd. Not a typical turbo sound at all from the description.

I'd firstly have a look for exhaust leaks. Check the exhaust manifild/turbo elbow to downpipe joint. There's a brillo pad type of affair in this joint to afford a degree of flex. This joint often fails and can be seen by black soot around it..

It's worth checking that the noise is not mechanical and originating from the transmission. If it only happens at 70-80mph and cannot be provoked in the lower gears at high engine speeds then I'd be looking at the wheel bearings, the RH driveshaft intermediate joint and maybe diff/final drive bearings.

Noises are notoriously hard to pin down in words...

If theres pleanty of power, it cant be Turbo feed pipes then..

As jim says, its hard to pin point a Noise without whitnessing it yourself..

If it is revving at 4K do you hear the noise or is it only when moving at high speed?

A reluctance to rev can be caused by many things. Check the boost sense pipe is not split (the little black one between the pump "UFO" and the inlet ducting) and that you do not have any leaks whatsover on your turbo ducting and intercooler...

A partially bocked exhaust will also cause this and account for odd noises...

Can you redline it by revving it in neutral?

Fuel starvation too can cause it. If the filter is OK, check the tank strainer is not covered in rubbish...

Today when i was driving the car up a big hill on the motorway when it hit about 3k there was no power if felt like it was going to cut out but didnt.Could this be from a split in one of the pipes to the turbo. Also is it easy to get to the turbo

Sounds to me that either the wastegate is opening in error, or an air duct no longer sits in place.
Could even be a crack in the airduct from the turbo to the intercooler.
