speed clock and rev counter

speed clock and rev counter

dont know what happens here but when i start my xantia my speedo and rev counter have shot up so much so my rev counter has gone all the way round and stuck there my speedo goes up to about 50/60 and i am still why this?

What year? Petrol/diesel?

Could be the first signs of the battery going duff.
It infuriates me to be wrong when I know I'm right

It's a common problem and as Stempy says, the first signs of a dying battery or a poor battery connection. The tacho needle does this on very low voltage.

It's a bit tricky to do but all yo need to do is "nudge" the tacho needle gently and it'll return to zero.

Some have managed it will a piece of thin wire inserted through the trip reset button hole and others have drilled a small hole for the same.

Otherwise, pop out the the instruments and tip them upsise down. This job is easier on a MK2 Xantia s there is no need to remove the steering wheel. I'm presuming it is a MK2 Xantia and they suffer a lot more from this quirk than the MK1.

Both instruments are driven by electrical pulses so any large pulses caused by arcing in the supply could cause your problem. As has already been mentioned check first the battery terminals, they may be tight but still not making good connection, best to remove them give them and the terminal posts a good clean with a wire brush and apply some grease. Then check the starter lead and battery earth to the engine.

Thanks for your advice in the end it was my battery so changed it and all ok now but i cant get my speedo back round to zero! Ahh well keep trying

I found a single strand of solid BT telephone wire (with insulation stripped off) was thin enough to fit along side the reset button, flexible enough to get to the needle, and stiff enough to give the needle a flick.
