broken door mirror

Unread post by isisalar »

Some lowlife scumbag thought it would be amusing to rip off my drivers door mirror a few days ago.The mirror itself ,the painted part, the motor etc are all ok but the unpainted plastic parts on both the mirror assembly, and the part which it attaches to (a sort of hinge)are broken.
I've managed to gaffer tape it in place for now but would like to get it fixed asap having just spent a small fortune getting it running (better than ever) again.
Can I fit what I'm left with on to a new/breakers part?
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Paul

Door mirrors only come as complete assemblies. You wont be able to dismantle the mirror surround from the door mount.
Fitting a new one involves removing the door trims and card to access the wiring connectors. It is not too onerous.

The plastic Citroen used for this assembly does not repair well using adhesives, so the idea of gluing the parts back together is not an option. Plastic welding does work, but usually there are parts missing from the assembly when damaged making the repair un-economic.

They do appear on Ebay regularly, I just bought a new one from an obnoxious supplier for sub £10, although I would not buy anything else from him again.

Watch out that some replacements are designed for the clip-on colour coded cover, and some have an integral black cover (on a black car the mismatch is not obvious).

This is a subject close to my heart, I managed to knock the driver's side mirror off whilst working on it, and now it's dangling there by the heater cable.
Ebay is your best bet, they're reasonably cheap and come in any colour you want, as long as it's black.

I've yet to treat myself though

Thanks for the replies.
V6 are you saying that the painted cover is clipped on and can be transferred from one mirror to another?
If so how is it removed?
Thanks

Hi Paul,

The coloured part is cliped on and can be removed by gentle prising it off with a screwdriver.

It have removed mine in preparation to replace with a mk2 model as I have temp on with all black cover mk1 model.

Use a plastic filler spreader and insert it in the gap between cover and mirror housing. You have to gently ease it off, as its clipped on. You may break a couple, if you do, a blob of silicone when refitting will hold it secure.

Depends on the spec.

Your VSX would have electric adjustment and heated mirror.

What is the spec of the donor car? If it has the same plastic coloured cover, it will be electrical and heated.

If not, you can rebuild the innards of your old assembly into the new donor, just watch out removing the mirror as the clips holding it to the motor are usually very tight. It is a fiddle but can be done. PM me if you get stuck as I have done a few.

If I remember correctly, you should start at the bottom of the end nearest the hinge. and ease the cover upwards and outwards, because there are some big clips on the top and outer edges that otherwise get broken.
