Xantia being broken - best parts to take?

Whether it becomes a reality is yet to be seen but I've been offered free reign to take what I want off a broken a '97 1.9TD xantia SX.

I have my list of parts but what other bits should I grab, in order of value/rarity? Time and skill will be my limiting factors as he wants the car gone asap so I feel a need for a chronological plan, military-style. Something I'm totally useless at :oops: :lol:

I originally wanted the IP, injectors, lines and fittings etc but it's now a grab-all-you-can offer for the same price. 8) I'd take the whole car if I could move it! :lol:
Suggestions welcome including tips on easiest removal.

grab the windscreen if you have the right tools, headlights, foglamps(?). exhaust, catalytic converter, fuel pump, hydraulic pump, battery, radiator, turbo, water pump, oil pump

I've now been offered the whole car, sans lights and exhaust (probably more bits missing not mentioned) and the gearbox is "faulty", for £50.

Anyone know if it's legal and safe for my little Ashtray to Tow a Xantia on a trailer? I expect it's a matter of weight and the Xantia would box the Ashtray's ears in that respect?

It's an offer I'm finding hard to resist - and even if I get it back here on the cheap, I'll also need somewhere to put it.

no is the answer to that Mike

the rule of thumb is what your towing including the trailer should not be more than two thirds of the weight of what your towing it with,

dont you know someone with a flatbed that would do move it for you cheap,

or even someone with a larger/neavyer tow car

How far are you moving it??

If the engine runs and you have someone who is competent to sit in the rear car with the engine running to do the brakes and its only a short distance its worth the shot as the main thing about the towing wieght is being able to brake and is the towed vehicle can still do that its not so bad.

I used a 2.1td xantia to tow an Ifor williams flatbed 4wheel trailer with a coupe on it from warrington to brum. the car coped very easily and even the braking wasn't as bad as i expected though i didnt dare go faster than 55 in the thing :)

As I thought Malcolm, thanks for the confirmation. I don't know anyone (around here) with a flatbed but I'll ask around, you never know. Hmm, I just remembered, didn't Colin say he can carry complete cars? Not sure how we'd load it though... assuming it can't be started.

It's too far to tow back KP, assuming it can be towed safely.

Hi Mike

I may be able to help :) :)

Gaffer sold both beaver tail motors but does have a 7.5t flatbed with ramps and winch that his boy uses to move his bangers around :D :D

If you can get the car started and put in high then it should have clearance :wink: :wink:

PM some details maybe able to form a plan of action :)

By the way peeps, the seller is after a front bumper for his Xantia - the reason he (mistakenly) bought this one, which isn't the same! Trouble is, he doesn't know which model he has and says none of the parts will fit his.

If the car won't start or cannot lift manually, lift the suspension for it
with a decent trolley jack and brace STRONG timber between solid parts
of the bodyshell and the suspension both ends!

Rear is easy as you can sit a chock on the top surface flat of the Xantia's
trailing arm and the existing bump stop. Front works in a similar vein too
BUT has limited steering - brace a chock parallel with the main strut and
the top of the front wheelarch and against the anti roll drop link tab that
stands off the strut - it HAS to be decent timber like maple measuring
about 1x3 inch x about 7-8 inches.

Bear in mind this is only to get clearance to move the car onto a flatbed
and too much lock on the steering will drop it off the tab on the front
strut so SHALLOW steering angles only!

Guy is probably after a s2 bumper and bought a 97 car believing it was
late enough but ended up with a late s1. Can't see him buying an early
s2 on a 97 but its possible - my v6 is a s2 on an R!?

No need for pics Andrew, I'm sure Colin knows what you mean :lol:

But they would help if you can get them, I'm still ignorant of most of the suspension workings of most cars, let alone these supersilk hydraulic systems.

I've just had confirmation, the seller IS looking for a MK2 bumper for his "burgundy" V reg.

The following picture shows an Xm with a failed strut top though the principle
for moving the car a short distance is the same; I had to move the car fully
powered up from the front of the house where it failed erupting through the
bonnet to a spot near the garage where I could work on it on level (safe)
ground:

= yes the rubber failed and the metal collar was almost perfect! :shock:

So what's news with this car - are you guys getting it to break for spares
- what's going spare from the spoils - I'd could use a decent TD engine and
some panelwork if the colour is the right red!? :lol: :D (there isn't a vulture
smiley is there? ;))
