How can I worsen my fuel consumption?

Just to get your attention...................

With my 2000 Xantia 90Hdi it seems that the fuel consumption I return is independent of the type of driving.

Long trips (12 hours virtually continuous on french motorway when going to UK) or short trips in France, always between 53 and 56mpg.

E x t r e m e l y careful driving makes no odds.

How much more efficient can the 110Hdi be (hence other post)?

Just shows what a tremendously good engine it is

It shows that by how long it takes to warm up in winter!

If you really want to consume fuel get an Activa

To worsen your driving let your tyres down a bit, put your handbrake on a bit, open all the windows a bit, and drive around with a roof box! Let me know how efficient the Hdi is then!! If you get 50mpg after all that then i'll eat my shoe (my work shoes).

On a serious note, that does surprise me, the wonders of modern technology, and it keeps getting better every day. Nice find there.

I'll tell you how to make it worse.

Stick the engine in an 807, I can get 20mpg with ease.

I only managed to get 32mpg out of Dex where Jim and most other people can get 50mpg from a 2.1TD

I too have found diesels fairly independent of how I perceive driving them... my BX TDs did 45mpg regardless, Xantia 1.9TDs 40mpg regardless, and my HDi110 estate 47 ish mpg (might get a bit more if I fixed the rear brakes I suppose....

)

I get 60 - 62mpg on a run with my 100 HDi.. about 45 - 47 around town, up to 800 to the tank full on a mixture of roads.

I just plod about these days though..

There is a noticable difference in consumption between motorway cruising and urban on my Xantia . motorway obviuosly being much better. But then I do have this damned limp home fault at the moment !!

Thats quite amasing actually, though i dont find that with my HDis.

What is your normal average MPG?

I usually get 50MPG from my little 206 2.0HDi 90 on my daily 65 - 80 mile commute. Thats a lot of motorway driving but also a lot of traffic when reaching the city. Im not the most economical driver though

Though ive had over 60 on the computer when just pootling, really takes some doing though, and something i rarely do.

The C5 110 i drive slower than the 206 and that returns around 44mpg on the same commute. Usually with the cruise set to around 70-75. If im taking it easier then it is easy to get more MPG from it.

This summer i took the C5 to france where it proved to be very economical, even with the cruise set to 80-85 on the french payage roads it was returning 44MPG. Then pottering around when i got there was around 47MPG.

The C5s trip computer reads under by quite a margin, so its not to be truested. I work out the MPG myself usually.

Ive heard it mentioned a few times that French fuel is better for economy, something about more of the right additives. Dont know what the truth is in that but i do usually get better economy over there.

It would seem you get more MPG from your Xantia than i do with my 90 206. Think i need a Xantia ...

dunno about fuel quality differences, but did notice that prices of diesel France / UK are now very similar.
Particularly surprised to see that, in UK, diesel now only a penny or so more per litre than unleaded.
In France, unleaded is 20% more expensive than diesel and hence about 20% more than in UK.
Andorra is the place to fill up, if you can bear to go to the place!

Yes i noticed fuel wa about the same over there now, it always used to be a bit cheaper.

Most cars over there are diesels, petrol is expensive.
